Good move by the Flyers (from a non-monetary standpoint). They get some scoring on the wing and a mobile defensemen (which they were sorely lacking). However, monetarily this throws everything off around the league IMO. This sets the bar for every other FA that is looking to cash in. How does this effect high profile FA's such as Briere, Drury, Smyth, Blake, Bertuzzi, Gomez, Forsberg, Souray and Rafalski, ? It should be fun from here on out.

He won't be the man if he continues to handcuff himself with redundant salaries.

I'm not sure I completely agree with that. Sure, he overpaid a ton for both these guys, but last year, he was able to obtain some pretty good youngsters. Philly won't run into any money problems this year, and can probably get through it after re-signing Richards, Carter and Umberger. This will definitely get them outta the Eastern Conference basement.

Timonen was brought in to help Pitkanen so you can expect a better season from him.

holy moly, 6.3 per!

Souray has to be SERIOUSLY happy about that number.

Good f'ing lord. I was quite pleased when I first read about this, and then I quickly saw what these guys will be getting paid for the next six years. Absolutely ridiculous. Hartnell had a whopping 39 points last year, and has never had 50 in six full seasons. He isn't worth anywhere near $4+ mil. That and, despite always being characterized as a gritty guy who will drop the gloves on occasion, he's far from a good fighter. As for Timonen, sure he's good, but he sure as hell isn't $6+ mil good. I'm afraid the Flyers ridiculously overspent here. Can't say I'm a big fan of the enormous length of the deals either. I sure hope Hartnell significantly improves, and Timonen not only is as good or better as he's been, but also helps Pitkanen out as well, because if all of that doesn't happen then this goes down as a very bad series of moves IMO.

No doubt that he is going in the right direction with these moves, but this could be a great pitfall if they are not mindful of their upcoming contracts (whether it be their current RFA's or UFA's that they may have interest in). Even a million or two saved on Philly's signing could mean avoiding potential cap issues in a couple years. Also, if they are indeed still entertaining ideas of signing one of the more high profile UFA's this inflates those contract in proportion to Timonen or Hartnell's respective contracts adding more potential salary to the top of the pile. Personally I don't think they are done with free agency yet so we'll see what kind of money they are throwing around.

Good trade. Kimmo Timonen is a great defenseman, and his brother plays for the Phantoms. Hartnell makes the Flyers even more tougher for this upcoming season.

Very nice signing by philly. I'm still hoping to get Drury though.

I thought Timonen sounded real familiar.

Wow. Real impressive move by Holmgren. 2 real good players to add to the mix in Philly. He started a good job of rebuilding last season and now he's working on making them a real talented team again. I agree with going long-term on both these guys, but the money is really going to screw up the market for everyone else. Over $4 mill for Hartnell is a little over the top given his history of offensive production, but he's still a real good guy to have on your team. But the real scoring threats in the market are probably now salivating at how GMs are willing to pay for forwards. And the Timonen deal doesn't surprise me that much. When Andrei Markov got $5 mill a year from Montreal, it meant the top-tier blueliners were gonna go for over $6. Timonen is pretty underrated and was one of most talented defenseman on the market. Souray will probably earn more wherever he signs, but I don't think he'll break $7 mill.

i guess "rebuilding" to the flyers means sign everyone good they can in a year. good signings by them. but this does sort of screw up all the other FA's salaries. looks like gomez won't be coming back if people are getting paid this high.
