Flames Sign Matt Stajan to Four-Year Contract Extension

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed centre Matt Stajan to a 4 year contract.

Stajan, a veteran of 693 career games, has amassed 116 goals and 212 assists for 328 points along with 372 penalty minutes. Currently in his fifth season with the Flames after being acquired in 2010 from Toronto, he has seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 41 games this season.

The Mississauga, ON native was awarded the 2013 Ralph T. Scurfield Humanitarian Award. The Scurfield Award is presented each year to the Flames player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, determination and leadership on the ice, combined with dedication to community service.

Contract terms: 4 year contract with an Average Annual Value of $3.125 million.

Yes, very strange news...Stajan, Cammellari, and Stempniak should all be gone by the trade deadline - these guys altogether should bring back a decent load of prospects and picks....and then they take one right off the table! Unbelievable...I thought they wanted to rebuild here? I thought Burke wanted to get bigger and tougher, so why re-sign this guy? So weird...this franchise has no idea which way its going...

Unless of course, no body wanted him for even a bag of peanuts...

Thought Stajan was all but gone, nope! Keep the last piece of the Phaneuf deal around to always remind flames fans that we got burnt, that had to be one of the worst trades in history.

The contract isn't too bad but I'm surprised Burke didn't sell him for a pick or prospect. 3rd line centers on expiring contracts are always very valuable assets at the trade deadline and the Flames probably could have gotten a 2nd round pick for him.
