Flames Sign Jiri Hudler to Four-Year Contract

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed forward Jiri Hudler.

“Jiri Hudler is a highly skilled and dynamic offensive player,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “He is one of the very best goal scorers in the NHL at even strength and he puts a very high percentage of his shots on net, generating scoring chances for himself and rebound opportunities for his teammates. He fits our need to upgrade and improve our skill and we are very pleased to have him on board.”

Hudler, a native of Olomouc, Czech Republic, has played 409 career games all with the Detroit Red Wings. Over his seven NHL seasons, he has accumulated 87 goals, 127 assists for 214 points and 160 penalty minutes. Last season Hudler scored a career high 25 goals and added 25 assists for 50 points and 42 penalty minutes in 81 games with the Red Wings. Hudler won a Stanley Cup as a member of the Detroit Red Wings in 2008.

Contract terms: Four year contract at an AAV of $4,000,000.

I'm glad it's not any team I like.

These are just the type of players I cant stand. They look good on paper but when it comes time to play tough hockey in the playoffs I dont trust him.

Doesn't really seem like a fit.... but we'll see. Hudler has tons of skill but he's just so small and doesn't have the speed to make up for it, if he did he'd be a superstar. He's listed 5'8 but realistically 5'6.

Free agency is crazy. Most deals are horrible for the teams. Or a lock-out is coming, or teams start building with draft/farm system...

Pfffffeeeeewwwwwww.... I heard the Wild were looking at him, and while worried, I knew in the back of my mind that Jay Feaster is a GM in Calgary and will ensure he doesn't land in Minnesota thanks to some ridiculous contract.

Fun fact, the Flamers now have 8 players with contracts of $3.5M or more.

Jarome Iginla / $7M
Mike Cammalleri / $6M
Jiri Hudler / $4M
Roman Cervenka / $3.775M
Alex Tanguay / $3.5M
Jay Bouwmeester / $6.68M
Dennis Wideman / $5.25M
Mark Giordano / $4M

I'm pretty sure Stajan makes 3.5 and if you wanna get really crazy Kiprusoff makes 6 million. But to be honest I wish Feaster would trade Kipper to a strong contender, he could get the best return out of anyone in a flames jersey and let him go get a cup.

I don't really like this Hudler signing but maybe Feasters crazy plan will all come together quietly..................

My thoughts exactly!

Soft ****ing shrimp is as useful in the playoffs as a glass hammer. Can't tell you how happy I am he's gone.

Good points. I missed Kippers $6M and Stajan's $3.5M.

10 players at or above $3.5M.

I'm pretty sure this is the same team that was so strapped cap financially a year or so ago where they played a stretch with only 17 skaters...?

I think a 3-yr, $10M deal with a fourth year option is more appropriate.

But he'll be a good fit in Calgary, they're quietly putting together some nice pieces to that squad.

I'd hate to see them miss the playoffs again. Yikes.
