Flames Send Phaneuf to Toronto in Seven-Player Deal

CALGARY, AB – Calgary Flames’ General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the acquisition of forwards Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers, Matt Stajan and defenceman Ian White from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect defenceman Keith Aulie.

Hagman leads the Maple Leafs in goals (20) this season and is tied for fourth on the team in points (33). The 30 year old forward played his 600th career NHL game on January 29th versus the New Jersey Devils. Over the course of his eight NHL seasons, he has recorded 240 points from 122 goals and 118 assists. A native of Espoo, Finland, Hagman will represent Finland at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Mayers, originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 4th round (89th overall) at the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, was acquired by the Leafs on June 19, 2008. The veteran forward leads the Maple Leafs in faceoff percentage (57%) and is second on the team in penalty minutes (78). The 6’1”, 217 lbs. right winger has played 710 career NHL games amassing 916 penalty minutes.

Matt Stajan leads Toronto in power play goals (7), is second in assists (25) and points (41) and fourth in goals (16). A native of Mississauga, ON, Stajan was drafted by Toronto in the 2nd round (57th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Playing in his sixth NHL season, the 26 year old centre has recorded 87 goals and 136 assists for 223 points in 445 career NHL games.

White, a native of Steinbach, MB, leads all Leafs defenceman in goals (9), is second in average ice-time per game (23:47) and blocked shots (91). A Toronto draft pick, 6th round (191st overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the 25 year old White has played 296 career NHL games recording 105 points from 28 goals and 77 assists.

I wonder who they gave up. Outside of Schenn and Kessel, Toronto doesn't have all that much to sacrifice.

rumored: Gigure plus a pick for Toskala. Leafs to take on salary in exchange for extra chance in the draft

The Leafs don't have much to give up for Phaneuf so there isn't really any way they could overpay.

Surprising to say the least.

Wow, can't wait to see the details on this one. Outside of Kessel and Kaberle, the leafs don't have anybody worth trading for Phaneuf.
And they already wasted 2 first rounders on Kessel.
Maybe a 3 way trade?

There is a lot rumbling that the Ducks are involved. Any official word yet???

Dreger is reporting the Ducks to be involved..

Why on Earth would they get rid of White? That guy has been working his ass off for practically NOTHING. Get rid of Finger and Xlby.

Bigger than Stajan and Hagman??????

I love White but Phaneuf has wayyyy more upside. No team in the league would take Finger and there is no way the Flames would take Exelby back for Phaneuf.
