Flames Deal Langkow to Phoenix

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today the acquisition of forward Lee Stempniak from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for forward Daymond Langkow. The trade is contingent on medical examinations for both players.

"It is never easy moving a player who battles and competes such as Daymond; however, because of our depth and options at centre ice, this trade presents us with an opportunity to positively impact the organization in a number of ways," said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. "It makes us younger and provides an opportunity to evaluate a player who may factor into our plans for the future, it provides Brent with options as Stempniak can play either wing and can be used on both the power play and the penalty kill and it creates healthy competition among the forward group for ice time."

Stempniak, a native of West Seneca, New York, spent last season with the Phoenix Coyotes accumulating 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points along with 19 penalty minutes in 82 games. He was originally drafted by St. Louis in the 5th round (148th overall) in the 2003 NHL Draft.

I'm curious to see who/what Calgary gets in return.

Good move for the Coyotes to bring Langkow back, though. Doan and Whitney could use a little extra firepower to help them out.

Was it Langkow who got hit in the neck with a puck?

I remember someone on Calgary got hit in the back of the neck with a puck.

Yes it was, against Minnesota.

It was a frightful scene. The sound was awful. Worse yet it was a teammate, Ian White or Cory Sarich that just unloads on the shot.

Daymond Langkow gets hit by puck [Full Incident] ...

-Edit - it was Ian White, who has a ****ing howitzer.

Seems to happen quite a bit.. If I was the GM and made a trade, the first thing I'd do is notify the player I traded.

Interesting - I was wondering if Langkow was in the Flames short term plans - his return to the lineup made for a decent feel-good story, but even before his injury his effectivebess was on the decline.

Curious to see what Uncle Fester got back in return for him - given Langkow's age, injury history, decline in numbers, and the fact he'll be UFA next summer, suffice to say they'll be lucky if they get a third or maybe second rounder for him. Maybe a prospect or a minor leaguer, but nothing blue chip. If he can return to form and stay healthy, could be a decent pickup for the Yotes...

There is no excuse ever for not telling the guy, especially when everyone has a cellphone.

Everyone seems to think that its Stempniak going to Calgary. Not a bad move if true.

the one player mentioned in the comments section of TSN is Lee Stempniak, When Langkow comes back he'll have to work hard to get back to the level he was...

When he first got to Phoenix a couple years ago, he exploded - had something like 14 goals in 18 games, or something crazy like that. I remember wondering of Stempniak had turned a corner. But this past season he came back down to earth and scored 19 goals in 80 games. Lightning in a bottle?

Flames did well to get a live, younger body back in return who's still capable of scoring 20+ goals. I thought for sure they would do no better than a draft pick....

dumb trade for the Yotes.

Stempniak is a streaky player but overall he gives you more offense which the Yotes sorely need.

I don't like Stempniak but at this point he is probably a more useful player than Langkow. Even before his injury Langkow was already on a pretty steady decline and chances are that will continue in Phoenix.

The fact that the Flames are saving over $2 mil in cap space and are freeing up a spot at center so that Backlund can play a more significant role this season are just icing on the cake.
