Flames Conroy clears waivers; ponders retirement

I think he's done... This comes a few days after his altercation with Iginla during practice.

Quote:
Craig Conroy's third career with the Calgary Flames would appear to have come to an end.

The National Hockey League club placed the personable 39-year-old on waivers early Tuesday morning.

General manager Jay Feester said he wouldn't comment on the move until the end of the 24-hour waiver period but it's believed the veteran centre may have asked for the move, possibly for the purpose of retiring.

Conroy, who was drafted in 1990 by the Montreal Canadiens, first joined the Flames from the St. Louis Blues for the 2000 season, went to the L.A. Kings after the 2003-04 season and returned to the Flames in 2006.

Unsigned after last season, he agreed to a two-way contract this past summer and played in his 1,000th game on Oct. 26, but has been a healthy scratch in 27 of the last 28 games.

Conroy has played in 1,009 regular season NHL games and has 182 goals and 360 assists, including two goals in 18 games this season.

Nothing much, but...

Quote:
It wasn't quite nose to nose, but Craig Conroy and captain Jarome Iginla squared off in a verbal jousting match during Thursday's practice.

"Ahh, we always get in those little battles now and then," said the 39-year-old Conroy. "I just told him, 'Miikka's in, let's shoot the puck. We're making 10 passes in front of him, let's shoot.'

"He's like, 'oh, you're worried about yourself?' And I'm like, 'I'm worried about you too.' We went back and forth, but everything's all good at the end of practice."

Just like an old married couple.

Conroy has only played in two of the team's past 28 games, sitting out the past 13. He's from the old school where you practise like you play and readily admits he doesn't always see eye to eye with his teammates, playing or not.

"I think emotions, me not playing and watching the team out there losing 6-0, it gets heated," he confessed. "But we've had lots of those. We disagree more than we agree. If it's on the plane or the bus, it just happened to be on the ice and maybe it got a little loud.

"It's all part of it. Sometimes the emotions are there. You say something, he says something. He disagrees, I disagree."

Iginla chose not to comment about the argument afterward.

It was time about 2 years ago.

You know when you have to beg the GM through the Calgary newspapers for a contract that your career is pretty much toast. 2 years ago he begged Sutter for a league mimunum 1 year contract. This past summer he begged him for a league minimum two-way contract. Both times Sutter caved in despite the need to get younger or allow younger players to step up for a roster spot polluted with useless old vets like Conroy.

Conroy represents everything that was wrong with Sutter's regime here - old, slow, comfortable, and too reluctant to do away with the familiar. Saying goodbye to Conroy is the first step of many Feaster will need to take to fix Sutter's mess.

I always hate seeing the old guys basically kicked out of the league and forced to retire. I was glad Brind'Amour didn't take it to that.

Conroy have pretty decent career actually, playing in his career with different roles.
Playmaker and defensive roles.

He'll be a TSN panel commentator before the end of the season.

except that in Conroy's case he wasn't bringing that much to the table anymore... and at that point why not try your hand with a hungrier and younger player then an old vet that uses a roster spot? A few years ago this would have been almost unforeseen, but in the past two years? 15 points in 63 games (and a -6). This year he's got 2 goals in 18 games and averages 7-8 minutes a game! A goon or a young player looking to prove himself can bring the exact same kind of production then Conroy has this year.

Either that, or the Flames will find some role for him in the organization. As goofy and as stupid as he appears on camera, he's very well liked here by the fans, the media especially, the team itself - hence all the pointless contracts he's been offered the past couple years. And I know he loves it here in Calgary as well - a creepy love affair that goes both ways.

As much as I hate Conroy with the utmost intensity, I think he could make a good coach - I can see him headed down to the farm in the nect year or two as an assistant, thats my prediction. But yeah, TSN will be after him too.

He had a press conference today to say he'll take the weekend to think it over - more than likely he'll be hanging them up for good come Monday.

Don't get me wrong, I don't blame the Flames at all. It's Conroy's fault for sticking around too long.
