Yes, that's what it means.

The players did not agree with the qualifying offers they got from the team as RFAs, so it goes to a hearing in front of an arbiter where representatives from the team and the player argue as to the player's worth. Then the arbiter decides how much the player gets based on the evidence provided. A team can also take a player to arbitration if they don't sign the the qualifying offer or, in the Pens case with Fleury, to keep other teams from submitting offer sheets while they work out a contract. It isn't guaranteed, however, that it will get to a hearing - the team and player can still negotiate a contract and avoid a hearing.

I saw this on another board.

Quote:
NHL salary arbitration is a tool available to some players to settle contract disputes.

An NHL player aged 25 or older with at least five years experience can ask for arbitration when his contract expires. The process is used by restricted free agents, because it is one of the few bargaining options available to them.

During the off-season, eligible players have until July 15 to elect salary arbitration. The cases are heard from August 1-15. Players and teams can continue to negotiate up until the date of the hearing, in hopes of agreeing on a contract and avoiding the arbitration process.

The purpose of the hearing is to determine the player's salary and bonuses. A neutral arbitrator, jointly appointed by the NHL and NHL Players' Association, hears arguments from the player, his team, the NHL and the NHLPA. The arbitrator then makes a decision based on the evidence, usually naming a figure somewhere between what the team offers and what the player seeks. Most NHL salary arbitration awards are for one year contracts, though two-year awards are sometimes made.

NHL Teams have the option to decline, or "walk away" from arbitration awards. If the team exercises this right, the player can declare himself an unrestricted free agent within seven days.

Hmm, no Matt Stajan there, that's a little surprising, but a positive thing. Arbitration is a nasty process, glad no one I'm concerned with is going.

And I guess that'll end the Canucks to sign Filppula to an offer sheet rumours.

Thank god no one on the Devils is going to arbitration. The players usually win during arbitration.

Someone special who thinks they deserve more than being offered when really they don't.
