Edmonton Deals Lubomir Visnovsky to Anaheim; Acquires Ryan Whitney

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Ryan Whitney and a 6th round draft choice in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky.

Whitney, 27, has played in 62 games with the Anaheim Ducks this season, scoring four goals and 24 assists with 48 PIM.

The 6’4”, 219-pound rearguard was originally drafted by the Penguins in the 1st round, 5th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Lubomir Visnovsky Reprimanded By IOC For Taking Cold Medication
Mon Mar 01,2010 12:54 PM ET By Brandon Worley
Look, I understand the rules the International Olympic Committee has in place. In a competition that pits the world's best athletes against each other, the last thing anyone wants if for someone to cheat. Steroids, illegal drugs of any kind and a large number of over-the-counter medication have all been banned, for fear they will be 'performance enhancing'.

Sometimes though, you really wonder if maybe we've gone too far.

Oilers defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky, playing for Slovakia in the Olympics, has been reprimanded by the IOC for testing positive for pseudoephedrine, a drug used to treat nasal congestion. Indeed, Visnovsky admitted he had taken the drug before the actual test was made.

Since he did not test positive on either of the other tests in the Olympics, and the fact that he consulted with several trainers and doctors before taking the medicine, the IOC decided it was best to just slap him on the wrist rather than suspend him. So at least there's some sanity involved.

And I guess you could call Advil Cold & Sinus 'performing enhancing', considering that where before you couldn't breathe -- now you can! Seriously though, the actual drug could be used for dishonest purposes, as the drug's common side effects are extra energy (the nervous kind) and elevated heart rate.
understandable, edmonton didn't want to deal with this scandal

Visnovski is not even close to being worth 7 mill.

I'd rather have the overrated d-man making 3.5 mill, over the overrated d-man making 7 million/per.

My guess is that's for taking on the extra salary.

Edit: Oilers get the pick I think.

My only compliant of Lubo when he was in LA was, he is soft as hell. Small and not physical. He will turn over the puck if he is hit enough during a game.

I have not seen that this year. Certainly no worse than Grebeshkov...Lubo was more physical than I was told to believe.

Agreed, I think (lakingsfan) that you could say the same thing about most smaller defenceman. Maybe moreso this happened in LA.

Lubo is very good defensively to go along with his offensive prowess.
