Ducks Sign Shane Hnidy

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Shane Hnidy to a two-year contract.

Hnidy, 31 (9/8/75), played in 72 games last season with the Atlanta Thrashers, scoring 5-7=12 points with a +15 rating. He set NHL single-season highs in games, goals, assists and plus/minus. The 6-2, 210-pound defenseman has played in 336 career NHL games with Ottawa, Nashville and Atlanta, scoring 9-28=37 points with a +18 career rating. Hnidy has also played in 23 career NHL playoff games, scoring 2-1=3 points.

A native of Neepawa, Manitoba, Hnidy was drafted by Buffalo in the seventh round (173rd overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with Ottawa in 2000-2001, playing in 52 games (3-2=5 points). He played with Ottawa from 2000-2004 before being acquired by Nashville in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2004 Entry Draft on March 9, 2004.

Hnidy was acquired by Atlanta in exchange for a 2006 fourth-round draft pick on July 30, 2005 and spent the past two seasons with the Thrashers.

Another gritty veteran defenseman for the Ducks superb blue line.

Pronger, Schneider, Beauchemin, Hnidy, Huskins, O'Donnell, among others. Even with the loss of Scott Neidermayer, this is still a great defense that should lead Anaheim to another top seed in the West.

Solid signing for the Ducks!

Nice pickup by the ducks. Hnidy plays with an edge and now goes to a team that encourages such play unlike many other teams. Good choice by Shane.

It will be good to see him back in a Ducks uniform. I always enjoyed watching him as a Cincinnati Duck (AHL) before he was traded to Ottawa.

Well sh!t. I hate to see him leave the Thrashers, they'll be makin a run for the worst team in the league next year for more reasons than just this, but he'll do a lot better for the Ducks than he would for Hartley an company.

God at this rate I hope Desbiens dont make the team an stays in Chicago where theyll use him.
