Ducks Send Hnidy, Pick To Boston For Bochenski

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired right wing Brandon Bochenski from the Boston Bruins in exchange for defenseman Shane Hnidy and Anaheim's sixth round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. In addition, the Ducks relinquished their option to exchange fourth round picks with the Bruins in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft (as part of the Stanislav Chistov deal, Nov. 13, 2006).

Bochenski, 25 (4/4/82), appeared in 20 games for the Bruins this season, collecting 0-6=6 points with a +2 rating and six penalty minutes (PIM). He also played in two games for Providence (Boston's American Hockey League affiliate), scoring 1-0=1 point with a +1 rating. Originally selected by Ottawa in the seventh round (223rd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Bochenski has scored 21-26=47 points with 44 PIM in 101 career NHL games between Ottawa (2005-06), Chicago (2006-07) and Boston (2007).

In his freshman season at North Dakota in 2001-02, Bochenski finished third on the club in points and goals while also being named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rookie of the year. In addition, he led North Dakota in both goals and points during his sophomore and junior seasons (2002-03 and 2003-04) and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2003-04. In 120 career WCHA contests, the Blaine, MN native collected 79-75=154 points with 118 PIM.

During his first professional season in 2004-05 with the Binghamton Senators, Bochenski recorded 34-36=70 points, leading all AHL rookies in scoring while also being named to the 2005 AHL All-Rookie team. In 145 AHL contests, he has earned 90-93=183 points with 83 PIM.

Hnidy, 32 (11/8/75), scored 1-2=3 points with a +2 rating and 30 PIM in 33 games with the Ducks this season. Originally selected by Buffalo in the seventh round (173rd overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Hnidy signed with Anaheim as a free agent on July 7, 2007.

A native of Neepawa, Manitoba, Hnidy has played for Ottawa (2000-04), Nashville (2004), Atlanta (2005-07) and Anaheim (2007) over seven NHL seasons. In 369 career NHL games, Hnidy has scored 10-30=40 points with 479 PIM.

Nice pick up for the Bruins. Some tough depth on defense now, and Bochenski was definitely expendable.

This was a salary dump by the ducks. I don't think they wanted to get rid of Him. Carlyle will make or break Bochenski who can score when put in with a good centerman.

Hnidy isn't a great fighter or anything, but he's just another gritty guy to add to an already very tough Boston Bruins team. They are near the top in the league in toughness this year - no doubt.... I'd rank them in the top 5.

Nice pick-up for the Bruins here, this makes a tough Bruins team even tougher. But I don't think the Bruins are done yet, they still need someone who can score some goals. Hnidy should be good for 1-3 FM's by the end of this season.

Agreed. I like this deal for the B's but what's seperating them from the top of the pack is a legit sniper. So long as Bergeron is on the shelf anyway.

Good call right here. Hnidy wasn't doing what Burke thought he was going to do, your basic salary dump imo. I dont know too much about Bochenski so it will be interesting to see how he does in Anaheim, if he stays there.

decent pickup for boston but i havent heard much from hnidy this year. he just adds some more team toughness to an already tough bruins team

I like it. Gives a more secure spot to Thornton/Reich, and adds some veteranship and toughness on the blue line. Since his contract goes through 08-09, I wonder what will happen with Aaron Ward (Considering he is a UFA this summer)
