Ducks Re-Sign Selanne

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has re-signed right wing Teemu Selanne to a one-year contract.

"We are thrilled to have Teemu back with us," said Executive Vice President/General Manager Brian Burke. "He is a very important player both on the ice and in our community, and his first-class nature showed again during this process."

Selanne, 35 (7/3/70), scored 40-50=90 points in 80 games with Anaheim last season. He led the team in goals, points, power play goals (18), power play points (40) and plus/minus (+28) in 2005-06. Selanne’s 90 points were the most he had scored in a single season since his 107 points in 1998-99 with Anaheim.

“I’m very happy to be staying in Anaheim, with a team I feel very strongly about,” said Selanne. “I believe this team has a chance to do something special and I want to be part of that, especially with fans that have treated me so well over my career.”

In 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games, Selanne led the Ducks in points with 6-8=14 points. He has scored 13-15=28 points in 31 career playoff games as a Duck, ranking second all-time in franchise history.

The Helsinki, Finland native has appeared in 474 regular season games with the Mighty Ducks during his career, scoring 265-307=572 points. He ranks among Anaheim’s all-time leaders in several categories, including goals (second), points (second) and assists (second). In 14 NHL seasons, Selanne has scored 492-549=1,041 points in 959 career games.

Since entering the league in 1992-93, Selanne ranks second in the NHL in goals with 492 (Jaromir Jagr, 532) and third in points with 1,041. The 6-0, 204-pound winger has led the Ducks in goals in four of his five full seasons with the club and has averaged 37 goals per year over his 14 NHL seasons.

In addition to his nine NHL All-Star appearances, Selanne won the 1999 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, given to the league’s top goal scorer as well as the 1993 Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the league’s top rookie. He has twice been named a First-Team NHL All-Star (1993, 1997), twice named a Second-Team All-Star (1998, 1999) and was chosen to be a member of the NHL’s 1993 All-Rookie Team.

Selanne signed as a free agent with Anaheim on August 22, 2005. He was originally acquired by Anaheim from Winnipeg with Marc Chouinard and a fourth-round draft pick in the 1996 Entry Draft in exchange for Chad Kilger, Oleg Tverdovsky and a third round pick in the 1996 draft on Feb. 7, 1996. On March 5, 2001, Selanne was traded from Anaheim to San Jose for Jeff Friesen, Steve Shields and future considerations.

Selanne was drafted by Winnipeg in the first round (10th overall) of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft.

I saw the contract is a 1 year 3.5 million dollar deal. It must be jam packed with some nice bonus' because he could have gotten more as a free agent.
