Ducks Re-Sign Brian Sutherby

The Anaheim Ducks announced today they have signed center Brian Sutherby to a one-year contract extension.

Sutherby, 26 (3/1/82), appeared in 50 NHL contests with Washington and Anaheim last season, earning 1-1=2 points with 64 penalty minutes (PIM). The Edmonton, Alberta native has played in 304 career NHL contests over six seasons, collecting 26-36=62 points with 338 PIM. Sutherby played in a career-high 76 games with the Capitals in 2005-06, while also setting career bests in goals, assists and points (14-16=30). The 6-3, 210-pound center also appeared in five Stanley Cup Playoff contests in Anaheim’s Western Conference Quarterfinal series vs. Dallas in 2008, going scoreless with two PIM.

Sutherby was acquired from Washington on Nov. 19, 2007 in exchange for Anaheim’s second-round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Selected by Washington in the first round (26th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Sutherby appeared in 208 career contests with Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He also represented Team Canada at the 2002 World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic, winning the silver medal.

Good signing!

He should have had 5 to 10 goals as a Duck. Just a lot of bad luck.

I think he is the perfect 4th line center for the Ducks. Supposedly he took a little pay cut to stay with the Ducks. 1 year 700,000. Down from 800,000 last season.

Good penalty killer and great at standing up for his teammates.

Sutherby had a bunch of great oppurtunities to score last season, but every time he came up short a little bit. Actually that doesnt matter - he is showing great heart out there and I'm sure next season goals will come.

I like this signing.

Good resigning. Solid PK man, can stick up for teammates (definitely a pre-req to being a duck nowadays), and is a solid face off man.

Wish he would have came to a certain team needing all of that located in the upper Midwest... but like that would ever happen.

Sutherby's a good guy - one of those young players from the Caps who was unable to make a difference or hold on to a roster spot once the Ovechkin/Semin era began - a lot like Pettinger and Eminger too, I guess. But he fits right in with the Ducks, and I'd take him on my team anyday too. Good signing.
