Ducks Ink Ian Moran to One-Year Contract

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed free agent defenseman Ian Moran to a one-year contract.

Last season, Moran, 33 (8/24/72), played 12 games with Boston, collecting 1-1=2 points with 10 penalty minutes (PIM). The Cleveland, Ohio, native missed the final 70 games of the regular season after undergoing knee surgery.

In 12 NHL seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins, Moran played in 488 NHL games, scoring 21-50=71 points with 321 PIM. He was acquired by Boston from Pittsburgh for the Bruins’ fourth round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft on Mar. 11, 2003. The 6-0, 200-pound defenseman was drafted by Pittsburgh in the sixth round (107th overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.

O man, the cup is ours, now!

I guess this is a depth/Portland move? There's really not much room on D here....

I was hoping to see Moran bounce back with another team after his injury. He'd be a strong addition to any team, plus he's another guy who's willing to drop them gloves when needed.

one spot will open up when Vishnevski is traded...

Niedermayer-Beauchemin
Pronger-O'Donnell
DiPenta-O'Brien
Moran

Moran will have the Jason Marshall healthy scratched every game role, and I can live with that.

...but if the Vishnevski trade falls through then O'Brien is stuck in Portland.

Someone actually wants, Ian Moron. The guy was awful in Pittsburgh, and this was a few years ago. He's logged heavy minutes and I never understood why. He's more of a liability than anything else. He had some of the best passes I've ever seen; to bad it was to the wrong jersey. Terribly inconsistent on defense. Whether playing the puck, or the man. He got abused nightly back there. Can't see it being no different now. He never even had a solid position for a few years there, floating between forward and defense.

He'll drop the gloves in only a DIRE situation, and still do no good. Sort of like a goalie would. He fought Laus, and Barnaby to note. Years ago by now I'm sure. Think his highest PIM count was low 50's for a whole year. He's a puss, and a terrible hockey player in my book. I really can't say nothing nice about him as a player. Waste of a roster spot for a young and hungry kid who will hustle and fight every night to earn his keep. This applies to both the AHL, and NHL levels regarding this signing.

Good pick up. Experienced, plays hard, willing to mix it up. And a good character guy. He'll give the Ducks some depth and leadership.
That Barnaby fight a few years ago was stupid. Former teammates in PIT..they were just pairing off with no intention of going until Barnaby started pulling him away from the pack. Bush league, but what do you expect from Barney? I can't wait to see him get tuned by some of the big boys in that conference. Fedoruk must be licking his chops like back in the PHI-PIT days. Ding ding.
