Ducks Acquire Mark Mowers From Boston

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired center Mark Mowers from Boston in exchange for defensemen Brett Skinner and Nathan Saunders. At the same time, the club also announced it has assigned center Petteri Wirtanen to Portland, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Mowers, 33, (2/16/74), spent the 2006-07 season with the Boston Bruins, scoring 5-12=17 points with 26 PIM in 78 games played. He set numerous career highs with the Bruins last season, including goals, assists, points, PIM, games played and average TOI (12:00).

Originally signed by Nashville as a free agent on June 11, 1998, Mowers has played in six NHL seasons with Nashville, Detroit and Boston. In 261 career NHL games, he has collected 17-44=61 points with 62 PIM.

During a four-year collegiate career at the University of New Hampshire, Mowers earned Hockey East Rookie of the Year honors in 1995 and was named to the NCAA East First All-American Team and Hockey East Second All-Star Team in 1998. With Nashville's development affiliate in Milwaukee, he won the Ken McKenzie Trophy as the International Hockey League's U.S.-born Rookie of the Year in 1999.

Skinner, 24 (6/28/83), split last season between Portland (AHL), Omaha (AHL) and Augusta (ECHL). In 41 games with the Pirates, he scored 6-12=18 points with 34 PIM. Skinner was acquired from Vancouver with a second-round selection in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for defenseman Keith Carney and Juha Alen on March 9, 2006.

Saunders, 22 (4/25/85), spent a majority of the 2006-07 campaign with Augusta, earning 1-13=14 points and 107 PIM in 59 games. Originally selected by Anaheim in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Saunders made his professional debut with Portland in 2005-06.

Wirtanen, 21 (5/28/86), recorded 2-2=4 points in five preseason games with the Ducks this month. He made his North American professional debut in 2006-07 with Portland, scoring 7-11=18 points in 67 games. Selected by Anaheim in the sixth round (172nd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Wirtanen helped lead Finland to a bronze medal in the 2006 Under-20 World Junior tournament.

Won't miss this joke at all. Great move by Boston to free up some space on line 4 for Reich and Thornton.

Awesome.

This move will help on Boston's part to toughen up Providence, IMO.

I don't really understand why Anaheim would want him.

Thank God...Mowers is just useless. ******* with no skill like him have no place on a 4th line/energy line.

Anyone know anything about this Saunders guy? I see he's had multiple double-digit fight seasons.

This is great! Mowers was dead weight and scared to do the dirty work, not to mention Dave Lewis' special boy. I can't believe the Bruins could get two depth players for him...??

depth I guess...the one thing it does do is clear up the d-man situation in Portland. Ducks had too many d-men prospects signed.

Saunders is a tough kid but the rest of his game has not improved much since he was drafted. I wish him the best of luck with the Bruins organization.

Skinner is a puck mover and he has been passed on the Ducks prospect depth chart by Kondratiev, Mikkelson and Salcido.

define depth players...Saunders and Skinner will be scratched every night...by your AHL team...if it's any good.

You just defined depth for me... Mowers is the most generic player in the whole of the nhl. Not sure what, if anything he brings to the table.
