Ducks Acquire Jesse Blacker from Maple Leafs for Peter Holland and Brad Staubitz

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks have acquired defenseman Jesse Blacker and third-round and seventh-round selections in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft from Toronto in exchange for center Peter Holland and right wing Brad Staubitz. The 2014 seventh-round selection returns to Anaheim after originally being sent to Toronto with right wing Ryan Lasch in exchange for center David Steckel.

Blacker, 22 (4/19/91), has scored 6-23=29 points with a +5 rating and 110 penalty minutes (PIM) in 130 career American Hockey League (AHL) games with the Toronto Marlies. The 6-2, 190-pound defenseman has also appeared in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games for the Marlies the last two years, earning 0-2=2 points with four PIM. Blacker has played five games with the Marlies this season, scoring one goal (1-0=1) with a +1 rating and four PIM.

Selected by Toronto in the second round (58th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Blacker played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Windsor (2007-09) and Owen Sound (2009-11). In 203 career OHL games, he collected 20-92=112 points with a +44 rating and 217 PIM. Blacker also appeared in 47 career OHL Playoff games, collecting 5-16=21 points with a +21 rating and 34 PIM. He helped Windsor to a Memorial Cup win in 2009 with 0-4=4 points in 20 playoff games and Owen Sound to the 2011 OHL Championship and a Memorial Cup appearance with 5-11=16 points in 22 games.

Holland, 22 (1/14/91), appeared in four contests with Anaheim this season, scoring one goal (1-0=1) with two PIM. Selected by Anaheim in the first round (15th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Holland also collected 5-4=9 points with a +4 rating and 22 PIM in 10 contests for Norfolk (AHL) this season. He has appeared in 29 career NHL games with the Ducks, registering 5-2=7 points with a +3 rating and eight PIM.

Staubitz, 29 (7/28/94), went scoreless with 10 PIM in six games for Norfolk this season. He appeared in 15 games for the Ducks last season, scoring 1-1=2 points with 41 PIM. Signed as a free agent on July 1, 2012, Staubitz has collected 10-11=21 points with 521 PIM in 230 career NHL games with San Jose (2008-10), Minnesota (2010-12), Montreal (2011-12) and Anaheim (2012-13).

I love that the Leafs keep stockpiling toughness, but we need some scoring too, with all the injuries.

Blacker was going was never going to rise up the depth chart.

Wow, love this trade.

Blacker was more than expendable for the Leafs as we have so many prospects stockpiled on D. Staubitz is great for the Marlies and a potential call-up but the fact that the Leafs could grab Peter Holland for that cheap is pretty incredible... this guy went 15th overall only 4 years ago and has played up to the potential going almost PPG at the AHL level, he'll be jumping right into a center slot on the Leafs and potentially a top 6 spot for the time being. Finally the Leafs get a big centerman with plenty of potential... now we cross our fingers he doesn't go the way of Joe Colborne.

I'd rather have Staubitz up over Bodie at this point.

Me Too. Especially in Tonights game. Brad has always been one of my favs. Hope he makes it to the Big Club sooner rather than later.

3rd round pick to Ducks can become 2nd round pick if Holland plays 25 games with Leafs this season

Because the Ducks need another defenseman Dumb move IMO. They do have too many forwards too though

I'd imagine that will be the case then unless the Leafs purposely try to prevent that

Maybe switch Bodie and Staubitz? I liked Staubitz during the wild. Always willing to hit, he looks for fights. An most importantly he is an entertaining fighter he throws with both hands. Playing wise he can keep up with play he will shoot and crash the net he looked good the 1st season with the wild. Things went down hill when he got less playing time and Mike Yeo became coach.

Bodie or Staubitz? Bodie is much bigger and is younger by a year, Staubitz faster, better fighter. Skill wise Bodie seems better.

Seems like a mutual win for both teams. Pending on Hollands development, could be huge for either team.

I had high hopes for Blacker because of his combination of grit and offensive ability but he really hasn't shown any improvement since leaving junior. Hopefully the change of scenery will do him good.

With Kadri, Bozak and Bolland all out the Leafs badly needed a center so this is a smart deal for them to make.

Hopefully the addition of Staubitz means the Leafs will never need to recall Bodie again.

Might as well make that pick a 2nd, the way things are going right now for the Leafs it's a sure bet he'll play 25 games. Nonis gives away 2nd rounders like candy on halloween.

I like the trade, it wasn't too long ago I saw Ducks fans pumping Hollands tires and saying he's better than Kadri. And if Staubitz ever comes up he'd be a good option as a MW/LHW along with Fraser. Blacker was going nowhere here and seems to have some of the same problems his buddy Seguin did, except he's not nearly as talented
