Ducks Acquire Brian Sutherby From Washington for Second Round Pick

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired center Brian Sutherby from the Washington Capitals in exchange for the club’s second round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Sutherby, 25 (3/1/82), has appeared in five contests this season for Washington, earning 1-0=1 point with seven penalty minutes (PIM). The Edmonton, Alberta native has played in 259 career NHL contests over six seasons with Washington, collecting 26-35=61 points with 281 PIM. Sutherby played in a career-high 76 games with the Capitals in 2005-06, while also establishing career-highs in goals, assists and points (14-16=30). The 6-3, 215-pound center also appeared in five Stanley Cup Playoff contests with Washington in 2002-03, going scoreless with 10 PIM.

Drafted by Washington in the first round (26th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Sutherby appeared in 208 career contests with Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League (WHL), recording 79-99=178 points with 362 PIM over four seasons. He led the club in both goals (34) and points (77) during the 2000-01 season. Sutherby has also played in 64 American Hockey League (AHL) contests with Portland, earning 12-28=40 points with 142 PIM. In addition, he represented Team Canada at the 2002 World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic, winning the silver medal.

Although I personally think a second rounder is a little pricey, a physical centerman who can skate well is hard to find. And he certainly fits the Ducks' mold. A nice pickup, plus better weather and a better team for Sutherby in SoCal.

I wish the ducks would sign another heavyweight,
but wow their depth toughness is soo good...

They have sooo many guys who can really fight well.

Jeez like the Ducks need another scrappy guy? Spread the wealth around! I like Sutherby, he can skate, chip a few goals in and fight. 2nd rounder is a bit pricey, but the Ducks do have some good young talent already.

They paid for him, but he fits the mold of their team real well. Good pickup by Anaheim.

Wow the Ducks are getting from tough to tougher.

Now we can all say that the Ducks have the toughest team in NHL.

Parros-Sutherby-May for a 4th line.

Very good deal for the Ducks. Like others have said, a 2nd rounder is a bit pricey - but for a guy like Sutherby, and with their depth, it isnt a bad idea at all.

I like this move on both teams part. A guy like Sutherby is only going to help the Ducks and as for the Capitals it's just another deal to help them in the future.

As a Caps fan I'm really disappointed in this trade. I hate to see somebody with a heart like Sutherby has get traded away. Bad move by Mcphee but I guess he has to do something considering they are the worst team in the NHL right now and his job is on the line.

He needs a fresh start. Hope him all the best and I think he will be a great fit with the ducks.

You're exactly right. I hope he get's his career in order and contributes to a strong Western Conference time like the Ducks.

Nice to see the Ducks improve on their chippy image. As far as the Ducks becoming tougher... I wouldn't agree to that. Sutherby is a chippy guy who plays with heart, and occasionally drops the gloves, and when those gloves are off, it isn't anything too special. I don't see why the Ducks need another guy like him, their team is full of them, it will be interesting to see who the Caps pick up next year with this pick.

Burke has wanted Sutherby for a while. He is definetly going to get a chance on a scoring line...possibly on left wing with Getz and Perry allowing Kunitz to go back to the McDonald line.

If he doesn't score they can always drop him to the Parros line.
