Devils Trade Sheldon Brookbank to Ducks for Greg McIntyre

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired defenseman Sheldon Brookbank from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for center David McIntyre.

Brookbank, 28 (10/3/80), appeared in 15 contests with the New Jersey Devils this season, going scoreless with 25 penalty minutes (PIM). He logged a season-high 19:29 TOI on Nov. 9 vs. Edmonton. The Lanigan, Saskatchewan native played in a career-high 44 games with the Devils in 2007-08, collecting eight assists (0-8=8) with 63 PIM. He recorded points in back-to-back contests twice from Mar. 4-7, 2008 (0-2=2) and Dec. 5-7, 2007 (0-3=3). In 62 career NHL contests, Brookbank has earned 0-9=9 points with 100 PIM and a +1 rating.

Originally signed as a free agent by Anaheim on July 21, 2003, Brookbank appeared in 134 American Hockey League (AHL) contests with the Ducks then-affiliate Cincinnati from 2003-05, registering 3-20=23 points with 397 PIM. In 361 career AHL contests, the 6-2, 205-pound Brookbank has collected 29-96=125 points with 970 PIM. In 2006-07, he won the Eddie Shore Trophy as the AHL’s top defenseman, leading all blueliners in points and assists. Brookbank has also appeared in 60 Calder Cup Playoff contests, scoring 2-13=15 points with 143 PIM. He won a Western Conference Championship with Milwaukee in 2005-06. Brookbank was claimed on NHL waivers by New Jersey from Columbus on Oct. 2, 2007.

McIntyre, 21 (2/4/87), is competing in his junior season at Colgate University of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). In 26 games thus far, the 5-11, 190-pound forward has collected 13-17=30 points with 30 PIM. A native of Oakville, Ontario, McIntyre ranked second with the Raiders and tied for fourth in the ECAC with 15 goals in 2007-08.

Selected by Dallas in the fifth round (138th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, McIntyre has appeared in 105 career ECAC games with Colgate, recording 28-34=62 points with 80 PIM.

I guess this is why the Ducks waived McIver. Now they have a d-man who plays the same role but is not quite as much a liability in the 6th d-man spot.

I figured a move would be coming soon. Brookbank hasn't played since Dec. 21st I think against Philly. I don't really know much about this McIntyre kid and he'll probably end up in Lowell.

Good luck in Anaheim Sheldon!

Good. Nothing against McIver but Sheldon is definitely both the better fighter and better player.

This McIntyre kid sounds like he has some grit for a college player. Is he in his junior or senior season? Would be interesting to see if he comes to Lowell for the play off push.

On the other hand, this more than likely means Jay Leach will not be coming back down to Lowell

So the Ducks go out and get Brookbank as an upgrade for the role McIver had been filling. Pretty good pickup for Anaheim, Sheldon definitely fits their style of play, and hopefully we'll get to see him play more often with the Ducks than he had been for New Jersey.

Just in time for a showdown with Derek Boogaard tomorrow night... perfect!

Good to see. I'd much rather see Brook over McIver.

I don't think the Devils lost anything here, they still have Jay Leach, and Brookbank only ever got into the lineup because of all the injuries on defense and forward. If it weren't for that he'd never have played this year.
