Devils Acquire Alexei Ponikarovsky from Jets

The Devils have re-acquired left wing Alexei Ponikarovsky from Winnipeg in exchange for a 7th-round pick in 2013 and a 4th-round pick in 2014. The announcement was made by President/CEO/GM Lou Lamoriello.

Isn't this something around the 25th player the Devils have re-acquired since they moved from Colorado?

More like 35th. But Poni was on the team last year and to let him go, only to bring him back, seems strange.

EDIT:
Just read that Zubrus will be having wrist surgery tomorrow and will likely be out up to 2 months. Makes sense to bring Poni back given that info, and the fact that he played well and fit in good last year.

The Devils wanted to keep Ponikarovsky but were waiting on whether Parise was going to sign or not. I guess Ponikarovsky didn't want to wait around since no one knew when Parise (and Suter) were going to sign.

This is a good move for the Devils. Ponikarovsky played well last year and he has a pretty good contract too.

Hes actually the 23rd player to be re-acquired by the Devils. Although it sucks that Zubrus is going to be out, Poni is a solid replacement for the time being. He has the size and strength Zubrus provides and also is very familiar with the system. He also had solid production for a 3rd liner while he was here last year. Hopefully he can find that same production. When Zubrus comes back this makes the Devils a bigger team which is always beneficial come playoff time.
