Devils Acquire Alexei Ponikarovsky From Hurricanes

The New Jersey Devils have acquired forward Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for minor-league defenseman Joseph Sova and a fourth-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Ponikarovsky, 31, had seven goals and 15 points in 49 games for Carolina this season. He was scoreless in 15:20 of ice time in Carolina's 3-0 win against Washington on Friday. He's a four-time 20-goal scorer, most recently in 2009-10, and had five goals and 15 points with Los Angeles last season. He signed with Carolina this summer as a free agent.

In 603 regular-season games, Ponikarovsky has 128 goals, 296 points and 397 penalty minutes. He also has three goals and 10 points in 38 playoff games.

Sova, 23, signed with the Devils as a free agent last spring after three seasons at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. He has split this season between Kalamazoo of the ECHL and the Devils' AHL team in Albany, where he had two goals and two assists in 13 games.

He always put up decent numbers with the Leafs, but he hasn't done squat since leaving Toronto.

At least his organization had the decency to let him finish his game tonight before trading him away.

I don't mind this move. Scoring depth for the 3rd line is fine with me and Tedenby hasn't done much of anything this year. Plus, this is only a rental.

No, Tedenby moves down the depth chart (back to Albany most likely). Boulton and Janssen aren't going anywhere.

Good move by the Canes. Our young players in Charlotte have been doing very well with proper roles on this team under Muller.

Ponikarovsky has been ok as a Cane, nothing great, but not a problem.

He is going to collect the pucks after warm ups. For and actual title.. Useless POS!

He played decent last year, but he hasn't been very impressive at all this year. He's been scratched a ton. I think he's better off in Albany to work on his game.

Yeah he'll likely be the 3rd line left winger with Zajac or Josefson Centering and Clarkson on the right wing. I like it a lot.

He hasn't been scratched that much at all actually. Only like 2 or 3 games this year. Maybe it seems like that because he's been nonexistent on the scoring sheet. He plays hard and has some talent but bottom line he's not putting the puck in the net at all. I think he only has like 1 goal this year. I'm not giving up on him yet though. He's got a solid upside but he's gotta get there sooner than later.
