Detroit Red Wings Re-Sign Chris Osgood

DETROIT - Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the Wings have signed goaltender Chris Osgood to a two-year contract.

Osgood will enter his 14th NHL season and 10th with the Red Wings, following last season's return to Detroit in which he posted a 20-6-5 record with two shutouts, a 2.76 GAA and .897 saves percentage.

Osgood was Detroit's 3rd round selection (54th overall) in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He followed with one season in the WHL and one with Adirondack of the AHL before joining the Wings for the 1993-94 season. His first eight seasons in Detroit were highlighted by serving as the starting goaltender for the Wings' 1998 Stanley Cup Championship and as backup to Mike Vernon for the 1997 title in a season that Osgood led the NHL in wins (39); teaming with Vernon to win the 1996 Jennings Trophy for lowest team GAA; and making three appearances in the NHL All-Star Game (1996, '97 & '98).

Osgood was claimed by the NY Islanders in the 2001 Waiver Draft and traded to St. Louis at the March of 2003 trade deadline. In his one full season with St. Louis and the last NHL season, he posted a 31-25-8 record and a 2.24 GAA-his lowest since winning the Cup in 1998 (2.21).

For his NHL career, Osgood boasts 600 NHL games played, a record of 325-188-66, 43 shutouts, a 2.45 GAA, and a .907 saves percentage-having faced 15,090 shots. In Stanley Cup Playoff action, Osgood has a 45-37 record with a 2.24 GAA and .910 saves percentage (10 shutouts).

Excellent signing, $850,000 a season, you can't argue with that.

Did you watch the playoffs the team sucked and Leagce Mentally fell apart he let in some weak goals. But the wings didnt play very good D and did but much up on the score board. Leagce did get alot of the blame which he said in the paper he deserved it if they lost. I dont like Osgood but he will be a good back up. But Leagce said it him self he didnt want to be a back up and thats all the wings wanted him for so thats why he left.

And- Legace doesn't want to stay anyways-he prefers to try the market-according to several interviews.
