Detriot Re-signs Zetterberg to 12 Year Deal

Quote:
Red Wings, Henrik Zetterberg agree on 12-year, $72-million deal
by Ansar Khan
Tuesday January 27, 2009, 11:00 PM

Henrik ZetterbergCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg left Tuesday's game during the first period due to back spasms.

Perhaps a new contract will make him feel better Wednesday.

In a 2 p.m. news conference at Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings will announce they have signed Zetterberg to a long-term extension. It will be a 12-year deal worth slightly more than $72 million, making it the longest and most lucrative (in total value) contract in franchise history.

and a major one at that,

his market value could have been double, even triple come july 1st, but Holland being the expert GM he is, got it done for much less.

i agree. just over 6 million a year for guy who could truly get 8-9 million is one hell of a steal. might help them get hossa re-signed in the offseason.

TSN is saying it's a 10 year, 70 million deal. I guess we'll find out which it is soon enough.

Man I hate these long-term deals, but whatever, it's not my money. (and they'll continue to not get my money until they play a mother fukcing enforcer )

Whatever the details, at least the Wings locked him up, which is great for them. Don't they have several other big free agents to be? Maybe Zetterberg gave them a "home-team discount" to help free up cash for signing some of the others.

The problem is figuring out a way to keep Hossa and Franzen. I'm glad Hank decided to stay.

We just need to get rid of Hudler and a couple of other useless euros.

Hopefully this will mean we'll have too little cap room for Hudler and Samuelsson, and enough cap room for some decent tough 4th liners. Im dreaming though...

yup, that's what TSN reports

DETROIT - A report says the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a contract extension with left-wing Henrik Zetterberg that could pay him more than $7 million a year for 10 years.

A story on The Ann Arbor News's website says the team plans a news conference Wednesday afternoon in Detroit. The story says owners Mike and Marian Ilitch, general manager Ken Holland, coach Mike Babcock and vice president Steve Yzerman will attend.

The 28-year-old native of Sweden is in his sixth NHL season, all with Detroit. He has 43 points in 45 games this season.

A message seeking comment was left late Tuesday for team spokesman John Hahn.

Zetterberg agent Gunnar Svensson tells the Swedish paper Aftonbladet his client might sign a 10-year deal worth about $71 million.

That's exactly what needs to happen.

Very good we get to keep #40.

You would think that Samuellson and Hudler's value would be decent right now, and other teams would be interested in them.

The original TSN numbers were wrong, it's 12 years, $72 million. The annual cap hit is obviously really nice but my god, he's gonna be a $6 mil cap hit when he's 40. 12 years is crazy.

Wow, 12 years, thats insane. But at 6 million/year, you can't argue much with that. But 12 years...? Maybe if he were a few years younger, but I can't help but think Wings fans could be cursing this deal 9 or 10 years from now.

I'm sure the contract is laced with "out" clauses and amendments. Besides the guaranteed money, I'm sure Zetterberg and his agent would want some extra insurance with that many years.
