With that out of the way, he deserved it. He left his feet, threw his forearm into the head and caused a concussion. Plain and simple guys have to stop delivering head shots. Hasn't he seen first hand with Crosby the effects of that kind of dangerous hit? And what's not to understand about more punishment for causing injury? It works that way in the real world as well, which is why its different punishments for pulling a gun on someone, shooting and INJURING someone or shooting and KILLING someone.
If Engelland had a rep for dirty, rather than tough, play he would have deserved more. You can't throw hits into the head. There's too many concussions. That's that.
I agree with you one hundred percent. I, too, am a fan of Engelland. I think he's a tough kid who normally plays it fair and square. In this case from what I saw, he left his feet and hit the guy with a forearm shiver. He deserved what he got. I'd rather have Brendan Shanahan handed out justice than some nerd with no real knowledge of the game. I kike Derek ,but I don't like the hit he delivered in this case.

Brooks Orpik, on Shanahan's rulings: "The consensus in our room is that it's been a little inconsistent lately."

He deserves the suspension simply because he was foolish enough to make the hit with John Scott on the ice. He should've waited for a shift change.

Should have been the end of the issue after the fight with Scott.

It was a little bit of a bad hit. Anyway, what's the over/under on Peter Merth playing in the NHL this year? Any takers?

...the so-called "Department of Player Safety" ( in their quest to clean-up the sport ) needs to pull their heads from their collective asses.
They are firm in handing-out fines and suspensions concerning matters that warrant no such harsh penalties, yet do nothing,...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, about one of the MOST DIRTIEST and DANGEROUS aspects of hockey -- the blatant "take-down" of an opponent during a fight.
The obvious, intentional act of "flipping" another player during an altercation DOES NOT BELONG in a fist-fight on the ice - the result of a serious injury is at-stake here, but it's both AVOIDABLE and UN-NECESSARY if the DEPARTMENT and Brendan Shanahan were doing the job they were SUPPOSED to be doing,....

The "take-down" is just a bail-out move,...a tactic used to surrender,...

He lays people out every night, and within the rules.
Mehhhhhhhhhh just bc he hasn't been suspended doesn't mean he's not guilty of this. I've seen him leave his feet PLENTY of times to make hits. Also, I like Orpik but I do not respect his lack of fighting. That type of player should be scrapping a few times a year especially when protecting MAF. (Side note, I think he has been playing with Engelland as a pairing this year though so that takes some of that out.)

Back in the day this was a perfectly clean hit. Unfortunately not in today's NHL.

Orpik has been suspended before - he got 3 games for breaking Erik Cole's neck on a hit from behind in 2006, and at the time had become notorious for boarding players. So he hasn't exactly been squeaky clean.

Meeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhh. Gotta disagree with you. I don't want to want to see see Orpik fighting anymore than you want to see Pronger fighting. As far as the hitting, no one that plays that type of game is going to get away 100% clean but by and large he does a pretty good job. Don't care about leaving the feet as long as it isn't a head shot.

Only makes 3 grand a game... thought he would make more than that.

He makes $566,667 per year, which averages out to $6,900 per game. It might be pro-rated though.
