Derek Boogaard Suspended Five Games

Minnesota Wild forward Derek Boogaard has been suspended for five games, without pay, as a result of an elbowing incident during NHL game #921 against the Calgary Flames, the National Hockey League announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Boogaard will forfeit $23,521.50. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

At 18:48 of the third period, Boogaard delivered a blow to the head area of Calgary forward Brandon Prust. Prust was injured on the play and did not return to the game. Officials assessed Boogaard minor penalties for boarding and roughing on the play.

Boogaard will miss tonight's game at Edmonton, March 3 against Vancouver, March 5 against San Jose, March 7 against Los Angeles and March 8 against Anaheim. He will be eligible to return March 10 vs. San Jose.

Good, **** Boogaard. That elbow was completely uncalled for. I lost the little respect I had for Derek after that.

It doesn't matter, he doesn't do anything anyway. He doesn't even fight anymore.

I thought 2-3...but Witt's 5-gamer must have helped lengthen Boogey's suspension.

I definitely thought Witt's was worse, and considering this is Boogie's first suspension I thought 2 or 3 would be fair. Prust wasn't knocked out and seemed to be ok less than a minute after it happened, so I think 5 is a bit too much. I think people are overblowing this as a huge cheap shot.

just saw the replay, and it was a pretty good cheap shot

i thought it was funny the way phaneuf and others went after him after the hit as well. A cross check to the back a slash to the skates but nobody squared off w/him until there was a pile up. It was like the villagers trying to take shots at king kong

With Boogie suspended does this mean Clutterbuck is the Wild's enforcer?

pretty bonehead play... the worst part is that it was on Brandon Prust.. you know if that hit was on anyone else on the ice that Prust probably would have went with Boogaard.. do **** like this to ******* not to guys like Prust..

boogaard isn't fighting as much because nobody wants to fight him(unless your belak) so as of the next 5 games looks like WELLER! not clutterbuck will be the enforcer, first of clutterbuck is more of a powerforward who hits anything but he runs away from fights so ya...... and tonight weller might want to fight souray? i hope so cause boogaard not in the lineup is always not a fun game

So, by NHL standards, this elbow from Boogaard is as bad, and ugly, as the Witt elbow that KO'ed Hagman? Don't get that, but I've long since quit trying to understand the NHL legal system.

1-2 games, tops. It wasn't close to anything as bad as Witt's elbow, or any other elbow that got 5 games, this year, or in years past.

But, hey, its Derek Boogaard, so, whatever.
