Defenseman Jim Vandermeer Joins Sharks

San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Jim Vandermeer to a one-year contract.

Vandermeer, 31, posted 14 points (2-12=14) and 74 penalty minutes in 62 games with Edmonton in 2010-11. He finished fourth on the team in hits (122) and blocked shots (78).

In eight NHL seasons, he has registered 101 points (24-77=101) in 436 career regular season games with Edmonton, Phoenix, Calgary, Philadelphia and Chicago. In 21 career playoff games, he has posted two assists and 17 penalty minutes.

“Jim will bring physicality and toughness to our blueline while bolstering our depth,” said Wilson. “He has proven to be a great teammate in his career and will be counted on as a steadying presence.”

The six-foot-one, 215-pound native of Caroline, Alberta was originally signed as a free agent by Philadelphia on Dec. 21, 2000.

Only $1 mil. and a decent bottom pairing guy who will fight sometimes. I'll take it.

Another 1 year, $1 mil deal - this day has been littered with them. A lot of these same names will be available this time next year once again. Its almost like everyone's expecting another lockout...

Decent signing for the Sharks...need some more toughness and meanness on that blue line..

glad to have another tough D man besides mUrray. Huskins played so soft it made me sick. worst player on the sharks lastyear.

Lost some team toughness with Eager, Mayers, and yes scott Nichol but gained some back with this. I like it, cheap to. With Either Mashinter or Mclaren up we will be fine on the toughness part.
