The Ottawa Senators took a big step toward keeping the nucleus of their team together when forward Dany Heatley agreed to a six-year contract extension worth a total of $45-million (U.S.).

General manager Bryan Murray was working against a deadline of opening night imposed by Heatley. They reached agreement shortly before 5 p.m. EDT yesterday, 2½ hours before the visiting Senators played the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"I've really enjoyed my two years in Ottawa," Heatley, 26, said before the game. "I'm just thrilled and happy that we were able to get it done before the season started."
