Daniel Carcillo Suspended Two Games
NEW YORK - Chicago Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo has been suspended for two games for an illegal check to Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen during NHL Game #136 Friday night in Carolina, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Carcillo will forfeit $8,378.38. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. At 1:47 of the first period Carcillo delivered an illegal hit from behind, sending Pitkanen into the end boards. There was no penalty called on the play. Carcillo will miss games tonight against Columbus and Monday against Nashville. He will be eligible to return Thursday at Florida. |

For some reason Rob Blake was in this video instead of Shanahan.

Carcillo's lucky it was only 2 games - dangerous looking play that could have been a lot worse - obviously the fact Pitkanen wasn't hurt on the player helped his cause.

Carcillo got off really lucky in my opinion. Given how strict the league has generally been thus far for hits from behind, they let him off really easy. While there may not have been malicious intent by Carcillo, this is a very reckless and dangerous play that could result in significant injury for the player being pushed. But because Pitkanen bounced back up, they let Carcillo off easy. Even so, Carcillo had a prior record with the league (even if not necessarily for this kind of play), so I'm still surprised he only got 2 games, and by current standards (not that I necessarily agree with those standards) I think he should have gotten 4 or 5.

Should have been 10-15 games.
This is something you simply can NOT do due to how dangerous it is, and Carcillo knows it.

Yea this is a horrible type of infraction. Similar to the one by Shelley on McQuaid last year. Forget what Shelley got in terms of suspension, think 2 or 3 games. So 2 games seems about right. Its really hard to guess nowadays, there doesnt seem to be much consistancy on rulings. One guy gets 5,another gets 2. In all honesty, this play looks much worse than the Sutton hit.

Hard to argue with this one. It's a little push, but it is far more dangerous than any of this "head shot" crap.
