Dallas Stars Place Zubov, Barnaby, Smith on IR; Recall Two From Iowa

FRISCO, Tex. – Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has placed defenseman Sergei Zubov (elbow – placed on IR retroactive to Jan. 11), right wing Matthew Barnaby (concussion – placed on IR retroactive to Jan. 9) and goaltender Mike Smith (concussion – placed on IR retroactive to Jan. 4) on the injured reserve list. The team also recalled right wing Krys Barch and center Joel Lundqvist from the Iowa Stars, Dallas’ primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Zubov, 36, is expected to miss Dallas’ next three games and should return on January 26 vs. Pittsburgh, following his successful surgery to his elbow on Friday. The 6-1, 198-pound defenseman has appeared in 44 games with the Stars this season, recording seven goals and 23 assists for 30 points. He currently ranks tied for first on the team in assists and is second in points. He is the only active defensemen to post 30 or more assists and 40 or more points over the past 10 seasons.

Barnaby, 33, suffered a concussion on Jan. 9 vs. Phoenix and is expected to miss a week from his injury. The 6-1, 191-pound right wing has played in 39 games with the Stars, recording one goal and six assists for seven points with a league-high 127 penalty minutes. Over 834 career NHL games, he has notched 113 goals and 187 assists for 300 points with 2,562 penalty minutes.

Smith, 24, suffered his concussion on Jan. 4 at Edmonton and is expected to miss a week from his injury. In 11 games with the Stars this season, he has registered a 5-3-0 record with a 2.36 goals-against-average, two shutouts and a .899 save percentage. He became the first goalie in franchise history to record a shutout in his NHL debut on Oct. 21 at Phoenix.

Barch, 26, will possibly make his NHL debut Monday against Los Angeles. He has appeared in 30 games with Iowa this season, posting eight points (3-5-8) with a team-leading 110 penalty minutes. Signed by Dallas as a free agent on July 18, 2006, he has appeared in 223 career AHL games over parts of seven seasons, tallying 25 goals and 41 assists for 66 points with 444 penalty minutes.

Lundqvist, 24, has appeared in 34 games with Iowa this year, collecting 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points and five power play tallies. He leads the team in goals, assists and points. The 6-1, 194-pound center has also played in six games with Dallas this season, going scoreless.

Nice! Barch should fit in nicely with all of Barnaby's potential opponents.

Barch always puts up big numbers in fighting majors. It's going to be interesting to see what he does while he's up with the Stars.

I can't believe they actually called up Barch instead of leaving Conner up! Maybe there were tired of teams like Phoenix and Anaheim running us over and guys like Halpern having to fight!!! Finally a great call up by the Stars!!!

Good move by Dallas.

I wish they had made it sooner so Shawn Thornton would have had someone to fight the other night.
