Coyotes, Whitney Agree on Two Year Deal

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed left wing Ray Whitney to a two-year contract.

“We are thrilled to sign Ray to a contract,” said Maloney. “He is a terrific offensive player who will help us on the power play. He is a great leader in the dressing room with a Stanley Cup Championship to his credit and will instantly upgrade our offensive attack.”

Whitney, 38, recorded 21-37-58 and 26 penalty minutes (PIM) in 80 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season. Whitney spent the last five seasons with the Hurricanes where he registered 119-215-334 in 372 games. He also collected 12-14-26 in 42 playoff games with Carolina. In 2005-06, he tallied 9-6-15 in 24 playoff games to help lead the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Championship.

Whitney has appeared in 1,072 career NHL games with San Jose, Edmonton, Florida, Columbus, Detroit and Carolina and has registered 324-545-869 and 395 PIM. He has also played in 83 career playoff games, collecting 18-25-43.

A two-time NHL All-Star (2000 and 2003), Whitney registered a career-high 83 points 32-51-83) in 2006-07. During his 18-year NHL career, Whitney has posted nine 20-goal seasons and has topped the 60-point mark eight times. Over the past four seasons, Whitney has averaged just under 70 points per season.

A native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Whitney represented Canada at the 2002 IIHF World Championship in Sweden and led Team Canada in scoring at the 1997 World Championship in Switzerland.

Whitney was originally selected by San Jose in the second round (23rd overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

Well Phoenix desperately needs scoring so Whitney should certainly help in that department. I'm guessing this means Stempniak probably won't be coming back.

I called this awhile back but he adds a bit of scoring and a much needed veteran presence.

Not a bad price for him, especially with his production.

What's the difference between a no trade clause and a no movement clause? It seems like they'd be one and the same.

Whitney apparently has a no move clause that includes a small window for a few teams to trade with. Whatever exactly that means.

no movement means he also can't be bought out or waived.

3 mill isn't necessarily awful but it could be risky.

No movement means he can't be waived and sent to the minors I believe.

As @capgeek points out, Whitney's deal is a 35+ contract and PHX on the cap hook no matter what, even if aliens abduct him or he retires. - McKenzie

lol

This sorry douchebag wouldn't take a trade before the deadline and I think they were a team interested in him...

Hope he blows his knees out in training camp.

There you go Whitter, reject a trade from LA because you don't wanna leave the team and move your family. Costs us a second rounder and a prospect. Then you sign in Phoenix? Way to go from fan foavorite to douchebag in one swipe of the pen. This guy was my favorite player for years and then he makes this move. What a disappointment. At least when Babchuk is being a douche he leaves the country
