Coyotes Trade Turris for Rundblad & Pick

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired defenseman David Rundblad (RUHND-blahd) and a second round draft choice in the 2012 Entry Draft from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for center Kyle Turris.

“We are very excited to have David join our organization,” said Maloney. “He is a young, highly skilled defenseman with superior offensive sense. We look forward to David joining us in the desert and becoming an important player for us in the future..”

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Rundblad has appeared in 23 games with Ottawa this season (his first professional season), recording 1-3-4 and six penalty minutes (PIM). In 2010-11, he recorded 11-39-50 in 55 games with Skelleftea HC (SEL), the second-highest point total by a defenseman in Elitserien history. He also won a silver medal with Sweden at the 2011 IIHF World Championship.

The 21-year-old native of Lycksele, Sweden played four seasons with Skelleftea HC from 2007-08 through 2010-11 registering 12-61-73 and 36 penalty minutes (PIM) in 153 regular season games. In 40 career postseason games, Rundblad recorded 4-9-13 and 13 PIM. He won a bronze medal as an alternate captain with Sweden at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship, and a silver medal at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Rundblad was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the first round (17th overall) in the 2009 Entry Draft.

Turris appeared in six games with the Coyotes this season, recording four PIM.

David Rundblad and a 2nd round pick.

No idea who Rundblad is but I'm happy Phoenix traded Turris.

Dope should have just stayed at Wisconsin for four years.

That would be an great return. Rundblad is very highly regarded and I'd be surprised the Sens gave up him and a second

Never fear Bryan Murray is here!

What a terrible deal for Ottawa, Runblad and a 2nd for a flameout like Turris.

Great job by the Coyotes to get so much for an over hyped bust who didn't want to play in Phoenix anyway.

Not sure what the Sens are thinking giving up arguably their best prospect plus a 2nd rounder in a deep draft for Turris. I know they have other talented D prospects but it still doesn't make much sense.

Wow, Rundblad has big potential. I think he will turn out to be better than Karlsson. Keep in mind this is the second time he's been traded since he was drafted.

I can't wait for Turris to flop in Ottawa and have no where to hide from the Canadian media.

What a piece of trash.

A terrible, terrible, terrible deal for Ottawa. Rundblad for Turris? A future all-star defenseman for a future 3rd line AHLer?

This is something I'm extremely excited about as well. There is next to zero hockey media in Phoenix so Turris was never held accountable for his sub-par play or his high contract demands. Canadian media will eat him alive if he doesn't perform, especially after giving up a lot to acquire him.

Strange that Ottawa gave up on Rundblad this early. I know has had some problems in the defensive zone but he is young and still learning.

Regarding Turris...I've always wondered what the point is for a player to choose the route to NHL via college if he choose to quit college after a year or two. In that case it should be much better to choose major juniors in order to get ready for the pros. In college you play about 40 games a year compared to 70-80 in major juniors.
