Coyotes Sign Ryan Hollweg

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed left wing Ryan Hollweg to a one-year contract.

Hollweg, who participated in training camp with the Coyotes on a professional try-out, has re-joined the Coyotes from the team’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage.

Hollweg recorded two assists and 38 penalty minutes (PIM) in 25 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season. He also appeared in 28 AHL games with the Toronto Marlies, collecting 2-1-3 and 34 PIM. Hollweg began his NHL career with the New York Rangers in 2005-06, recording 2-3-5 and 84 PIM in 52 games as a rookie. In 225 career NHL games with the Rangers and Maple Leafs, the 5-foot-10, 212-pound left wing has registered 5-9-14 and 349 PIM. He has also played in 14 career playoff games, all with the Rangers.

Prior to his professional career, Hollweg spent parts of five seasons with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he recorded 94-139-233 and 478 PIM in 233 games. A native of Downey, Calif., he also represented the United States at the 2002 World Junior Championship.

Hollweg was originally selected by the Rangers in the eighth round (238th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Looks like the new coach, unlike Gretz, wants an enforcer.......

I saw Hollweg a number of times last year in the AHL. He looked useless.

Lessard or somebody else would have been better.

Good, better than nothing. Makes games exciting, was great with the Marlies, hit everything that moved.

You know, I actually like this. Games will be entertaining to say the least. I was wondering why Maclean was sent down when we could have used him as a extra.

We should get a pool set up to see how long it takes for him to get suspended.

Looks like Maloney is full of sh!t when it comes to keeping an enforcer.
