Coyotes Sign Raffi Torres
GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed unrestricted free agent forward Raffi Torres to a multi-year contract.
“We are very pleased to sign Raffi to a multi-year contract,” said Maloney. “Raffi a big, strong winger who is an excellent skater. He is a tough player to play against and will add grit and skill to our lineup.” The 6-foot, 216 pound Torres has appeared in 512 NHL regular season games, recording 112-99-221 and 390 penalty minutes (PIM) in six NHL seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets and Edmonton Oilers. Last season, Torres appeared in 80 games with the Vancouver Canucks recording 14-15-29 and 78 PIM. Torres helped the Canucks reach the Stanley Cup Finals, appearing in 23 playoff games and registering 3-4-7 and 28 PIM. The 29-year-old native of Toronto, Ontario has played in 53 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, including two Final appearances with Vancouver in 2010-11 and Edmonton in 2005-06, recording 7-15-22 and 58 PIM. Torres was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in the first round (fifth overall) in the 2000 Entry Draft. Last edited by Thrillhouse; 07-01-2011 at 02:07 PM. |

He was hitting everyone with the puck in the playoffs. Good for the Coyotes, but he can't seem to stay on a team.

Even though he's a piece of ****, this is a big loss for the Nucks. Raffi did pretty much everything for them last year, and provided a stabilizing presence with his physical play. It also hampered them later on in the playoffs, but, whatever.
For the Coyotes... meh.

Not surprised Torres found a different home - definitley a different situation for him compared to last season, when he had to wait until August to find a job. The guy hits like a truck and can makes things happen while chipping in 15-20 goals - and thats a decent price too.
Canucks better find a way to replace that muscle though - even with Torres they were lacking toughness, so now in theory they need 2-3 more big bodies to fill that need.....

I'm well aware of that. Like I said I'd rather have him than some soft ass euro. The Coyotes have enough of those players as it is. But I just hope this isn't the main "toughness" move Maloney makes.

I like this pick-up for Phoenix. Torres is a hell of a hitter, and while he may not answer the bell as much as we'd all like, he is far more honorable than several of his lowlife Vancouver ex-teammates.
