Coyotes Sign Mike York

Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed left wing Mike York to a one-year contract.

York, 29, registered 10-11-21 and 22 penalty minutes (PIM) in 66 games with the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders last season. York collected 6-7-13 and 14 PIM in 32 games with the Islanders last season before Philadelphia acquired him for Randy Robitaille and a fifth round selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on Dec. 20, 2006. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of Waterford, Michigan then recorded 4-4-8 and 8 PIM in 34 games with the Flyers.

For his NHL career, York has posted 121-187-308 and 131 PIM in 515 games with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Islanders, and Philadelphia.

York was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team for 1999-2000 when he scored a career-high 26 goals among 50 points while playing all 82 games with the Rangers. He finished third in the voting for the Calder Trophy (NHL Rookie of the Year) that season. York played in the NHL All-Star Game in 2002 while in the midst of a season in which he collected 20-41-61 in 81 games with the Rangers and Edmonton. York has also recorded four seasons of 50 points or more during his NHL career.

York was selected by the Rangers in the sixth round (136th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Rangers after completing a stellar four seasons at Michigan State. York was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and an NCAA All-American in both 1998 and 1999. He was named CCHA Player of the Year as well as a CCHA First Team All-Star in 1999. He was named a CCHA Second Team All-Star in 1998.

Wow, big splash. This guy was absolutely horrible last year. Let's hope a change of scenery will get him closer to his typical 50 point numbers. I wish I could honestly say I see that happening. Can't say I'm a big fan of this move. I guess the potential of getting a 50 point guy for a mil a year is a decent gamble.

Well, if he doesn't improve from last year I'm gonna say just his presence should guarantee the Coyotes a last place finish. Awful would be too kind to describe his play last season.

He'll be one of the better players on the Coyotes. Which is sad, needless to say. Either way they need bodies to fill the roster. York fits that mold...

Yeah, he's pretty effective at taking up space, that's about it at this point.

Yep, he could be our 1st-line center with Doan and Reinphrect.

I'm sort of surprised that anyone would sign him. He has a godawful season last year. Just glad he didn't end up back in Philly. (not that I thought he would)

Why are the Yotes even going to try next year? They should have signed Todd Fedoruk, Kip Brennan, Reed Low and Eric Cairns - and just hope that they beat the **** out of the other teams, while Doan sneaks a puck or two in for a win every 8 games or so...

I thought he was going to have solid career but this looks to be his last chance because he was awful the last few seasons.
