Coyotes Sign Cormier to Entry-Level Contract

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have signed left wing Kevin Cormier to an entry-level contract.

Cormier, 20, played in 69 games this season with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), collecting 16-11-27 and 202 penalty minutes (PIM). The 6-foot-3, 249-pound forward led the Mooseheads in PIM and ranked tied for 4th in the entire QMJHL. Cormier also finished 5th on the team in power play goals (7), 6th in goals and tied for 8th in points. He collected one assist and 18 PIM in 11 playoff games with Halifax.

Last season, the Moncton, New Brunswick native played in 60 games as a QMJHL rookie with Halifax, registering 2-5-7 and 235 PIM in 2004-05. Cormier’s 235 PIM led the Mooseheads and ranked 2nd in the entire QMJHL.

Cormier was originally drafted by the Coyotes in the 6th round (168th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Interesting - Good to see...how tough is this guy? I know that I've heard on multiple times that with Gratton in the lineup, the Yotes played much better - I think Gretzky was tired of watching his team get pushed around as most of the season was played without a tough-guy...

Cormier was the heavyweight champ of the Q the last two years.

He's as strong as an ox and fights very open with a jackhammer left hand.

His major issue right now is balance, he needs a fair bit of work on it.

He has KO power in both hands but in the Q almost always fought entirely southpaw cos he just overpowered almost everyone everyone, only doyle he didnt just dominate.

I'll upload some clips later.

This is certainly good news. Not that he'll be playing for them anytime soon, but just the fact that the Yotes signed a huge legitimate enforcer is encouraging.

Cormier is a monster to put it softly, ripped through the Q the last two seasons. If he can work on his balance, we might be seeing the second coming of Dave Brown here...

Good to see the Yotes signing a lot of young players now instead of later. I hope to see this guy in training camp.

Ok here's some Cormier clips from the last couple of years in the QMJHL, a lot of this is amateur stuff os not always the best quality:

All clips are on rapidshare, sorry if that's a problem but i got nowhere else to host them.

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) vs Alexandre Vachon (Rimouski) Please vote!

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) vs David Starenky (Gatineau) Please vote!

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) v Matt Nickerson (Victoriaville) Please vote!

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) v Olivier Legault (Drumondville) Please vote!

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) v Dylan Garrioch (Val d'Or) Please vote!

**Garrioch is a regular poster here on HF.com under the name Big_Dyl**

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) v Jimmy Bonneau (PEI) Please vote!

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) v David Victor (Cape Breton) Please vote!

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) v Martin Aubin (Baie-Comeau) Please vote!

And finally this is from a line brawl from this season when Cormier eventually fights Andre Joanisse, who appears to be waiting for the green light from his bench, and then some old school behaviour, challenging the bench. This clip is the whole brawl that starts with Ben Chaisson beating up Pierre-Olivier Duperré.

Kevin Cormier (Halifax) v Andre Joanisse (Acadie-Bathurst) Please vote!

Great news!

I started to wonder if they even planned on signing Cormier.

Unfortunately that's wishful thinking. Cormier won't see any ice time for the Coyotes for a couple years at the very least.

I see Cormier in the ECHL next year.

He's got pretty good hockey sense and is effective parked in front of the net on the PP. He's not just a go out there and fight guy he has some ability. He'll never be a top-line player but he has sense, which gives him a chance.

doaner - which fight was it you saw?

I saw the Joanisse fight. Almost had a headache, but it was worth it once they finally dropped em.

Ture ture...Gratts will have to do for now. I can see it now...Gratton and Cormier going at it in camp. Would be a nice fight. Wishful thinking though I am sure.
