Coyotes Sign Brian McGrattan to One-Year Contract

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed right wing Brian McGrattan to a one-year contract.

McGrattan, 26, was acquired from the Ottawa Senators on June 25, 2008 in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

McGrattan recorded three assists and 46 penalty minutes (PIM) in 38 games with the Senators last season. The 6-foot-4, 234-pound McGrattan has registered 2-8-10 and 287 PIM in 143 career NHL games over three seasons, all with Ottawa. In 2005-06, he set career-highs in goals (2), assists (3), points (5), PIM (141) and games played (60).

From 2002-2005, McGrattan appeared in 196 games with Binghamton of the American Hockey League (AHL), recording 25-22-47 and 1,051 PIM. In 2004-05, McGrattan broke the AHL single-season penalty minute record with 551 PIM.

A native of Hamilton, Ontario, McGrattan was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round (104th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

If he gets the ice time he'll be a new fan favourite in the desert. We miss him and wish him luck in Ottawa.

I have a feeling Gretzky will do with McGrattan and Fridge something similar to what Randy Carlyle did in Anaheim with Parros and Thornton. Play both some nights and on other nights, alternate between them.

Fedoruk's too good for that IMO. Thornton was only marginally better than Parros, so alternating them made sense. If I had to bet I would say we'll see both Fedoruk and McGrattan in the lineup on a very limited basis, but I can't see Fedoruk getting scratched too often, meaning McGrattan will get the bulk of them.

Can we assume by the signing that his shoulder isn't as messed up as previously thought?
