Coyotes Sign Alex Auld to One-Year Deal
GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed goaltender Alex Auld to a one-year contract.
In five NHL seasons, Auld has collected a record of 46-44-13, a 2.89 goals against average (GAA), and a .902 save percentage (SV%) in 108 career games with Vancouver and Florida. His best season to date came in 2005-06 when he posted a 33-26-6 record, 2.94 GAA, and .902 SV% in 67 games with Vancouver. For his performance, Auld was named the Canucks’ Most Valuable Player. Auld, 26, registered a 7-13-5 record, 3.34 GAA, and .888 SV% in 27 appearances with Florida last season. The native of Thunder Bay, Ontario was acquired by Florida along with Todd Bertuzzi and Bryan Allen from Vancouver for Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a 6th round draft choice in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft on June 23, 2006. Auld represented Team Canada in the 2006 World Hockey Championships in Latvia and he won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2001 World Junior Championships. Auld was selected by Florida in the 2nd round (40th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Last edited by VodkaFish; 08-13-2007 at 06:50 PM. Reason: release |

I don't really understand why the Yotes signed an other goalie??
They are Joseph, Aebisher, Tellqvist and Leneveu...There should be a transaction before long with one of them. But I think that the Coyotes have a bad management of their wage bill, they should rather reserve it to take a player of impact to compensate for the departure of some their good players. Agree with me guys?? |

I don't get it either but they signed them for cheap. So, if it doesn't go the way they pan out. They are only losing 600k. |

This is all true. The one thing Auld always had going for him was size...of course something that can't be taught or coached. He looks absolutely enormous in the net. And he does show flashes of brilliance every now and then that seem like he'd be a #1 guy. However he has never seemed to be able to harness everything and put it all together.
That being said there is definitely a log jam in Phoenix now. I think Tellqvist is the best choice out of the lot (I thought CuJo was going to retire???) and LeNeveu is the wild card. Anyways as long as there's still room for Gratton in the lineup, I don't think anyone around here will be too concerned. |

I like this signing but it's hard to understand where Auld will fit in. Even if he were to play in the AHL, you'd think Phoenix would want to give LeNeveu a majority of the starts. I'd rather have Auld as my back up goalie than Tellqvist but it doesn't appear that it's going to work out that way.

I agree. Which is why I don't see this as a bad signing. I do feel Auld has some untapped potential and having him around short term certainly can't hurt the team. At the very least it provides some competition in training camp.
