Coyotes Re-Sign Mikael Tellqvist and Mike Zigomanis

Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have signed goaltender Mikael Tellqvist and center Mike Zigomanis to two-year contracts.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Tellqvist has played 19 games for the Coyotes this season, posting a record of 9-7-2 with a 3.22 goals against average (GAA) and a .893 save percentage (SV%). Tellqvist also played one game with the Maple Leafs this season, posting a 2.03 GAA and a .895 SV%. His 9 NHL wins this season are one short of his career high. In addition, Tellqvist played 3 games with the Toronto Marlies (AHL), posting a 2-1-0 record with a 3.95 GAA and a .882 SV%.

Tellqvist was acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 28, 2006 for Tyson Nash and a 4th round choice in the 2007 Entry Draft. In 58 career NHL games with Toronto and Phoenix, Tellqvist has posted a 25-22-2-4 record with a 3.10 GAA and a .894 SV%.

Last season, the 27-year-old native of Sundbyberg, Sweden played 25 games with the Maple Leafs, posting a 10-11-2 record with a 3.13 GAA and a .895 save percentage. Tellqvist was a member of the gold medal-winning Team Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. He also represented Sweden at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In 2004-05, Tellqvist played 45 games with the St. John’s Maple Leafs (AHL), setting career highs in wins (26) and save percentage (.921). In addition, Tellqvist recorded a 2.65 GAA.

Tellqvist was originally drafted by Toronto (3rd choice, 70th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Zigomanis has played 52 games with the Coyotes this season, setting career highs in goals (10), assists (7), points (17) and penalty minutes (34). In addition, he ranks 7th in the NHL in face-off win percentage at 56.9%.

The Coyotes originally signed Zigomanis as a free agent on July 21, 2006. The North York, Ontario native spent three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes and finished last season with the St. Louis Blues following a trade on Jan. 30, 2006 in which Carolina received Doug Weight.

In 111 NHL career games, Zigomanis has registered 13-11-24 points and 40 penalty minutes. He was selected by Carolina in the 2nd round (46th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Zigomanis was named the MVP of the 2004 AHL All-Star Classic while representing Carolina’s affiliate, the Lowell Lock Monsters.
