Coyotes Re-Sign Lee Stempniak

Quote:
Unrestricted free agent Lee Stempniak signed a two-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday night, according to league sources. No other details were available, and the signing will be officially announced Monday.

Stempniak, 27, a right wing, joined the Coyotes at the trade deadline last season in a deal with Toronto. In 18 regular-season games, he had 14 goals and four assists but was limited to two assists in seven playoff games.

Stempniak had 14 goals and 16 assists with the Maple Leafs.

He was a fifth-round draft pick (148th overall) of the St. Louis Blues in 2003.

If he can play half as good as he did after the trade deadline I have no problem with this at all.

Kind of funny, I had been flipping through my 2010 yearbook earlier today and saw Stempniak was still listed as a FA, and I was wondering if he'd pop up in Phoenix again. 14 goals in 18 regular season games with the Coyotes, but nothing in the playoffs - I can see why Phoenix may have had to think twice before bringing him back - any word on the terms yet?

If he can pick up where he left off at the end of the season, bringing him back, along with Whitney, should be ebough to ensure a return to the playoffs for the Yotes.

It's just a rumor right now, nothing official. Stempniak figured he'd get a good offer on the open market but apparently that hasn't been the case. Phoenix made him an offer early into free agency and I guess it wasn't enough to impress and he decided to play the waiting game. It seems like it may have turned out to be one of the better offers he's received so far.

Anything new on this yet? Rumors have the thrashers trying to get him as well.

Last thing I heard it's still 50/50. Nothing official yet. Phoenix has only offered him a 1 year contract. Stempniak would like a longer deal and that may ultimately influence his decision.

RT @ "NHL Sources Say" If what I heard earlier is true, Stempniak/Phx will be announced tomorrow. It's a multi year deal believed to be 2 years.

I dont think Dave Strader (tv guy for Phoenix) would retweet that unless it was something set in stone. That may just be me though.

Stempniak at 1.75 for 2 years could be the signing of the summer if he does it again! Nice job Don Maloney! Most goals next to Kovalchuk!

Not sure if I agree 100% with Nash though... Looks like he is still speaking out his azz.

Edit... It's official, but its 2 years at 1.75 per year.. 3.5 total... I'm sure Nash meant that, just had it worded weird. http://twitter.com/nhlupdate/status/22493245396
