Coyotes Re-Sign Carcillo to Two-Year Deal

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-signed left wing Daniel Carcillo to a two-year contract.

“We are very pleased to have signed Daniel Carcillo to a new contract,” said Maloney. “He is a key member of our team who brings a unique combination of toughness, speed and skill to the lineup.”

Carcillo, 23, recorded 13-11-24 and a league-leading 324 penalty minutes (PIM) in 57 games last season as a rookie. He also ranked 5th on the Coyotes and T-9th among all NHL rookies in goals (13). The 5-foot-11, 203-pound Carcillo registered five goals in the final two games of the 2007-08 season, including his first career hat trick in a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars on April 4.

A native of King City, Ontario, Carcillo became the first rookie in NHL history to record over 15 points and 300 PIM in the same season. He also established a new Jets/Coyotes record for penalty minutes by a rookie. The previous record was 287 PIM, set by Jimmy Mann in 1979-80.

Carcillo made his NHL debut with the Coyotes on March 3, 2007 after being acquired from Pittsburgh with a third round draft pick in the 2008 Entry Draft in exchange for Georges Laraque on Feb. 27, 2007. In the final 18 games of the season, Carcillo collected 4-3-7 and 74 PIM.

The 5-foot-11, 203-pound Carcillo spent parts of two seasons (2005-07) with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL), recording 32-22-54 and 494 PIM in 103 games.

Carcillo was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (73rd overall) of the 2003 Entry Draft.

Great signing.

Carcillo has some skill above what he brings as an agitator and fighter.

I'm actually surprised that the Coyotes didn't lock him up for longer than 2 years (of course maybe it was Carcillo who wants to really cash in a couple of years from now). I'll be interested to see what he signed for....

I could have sworn this happened a while ago, but they just announced the signing today?

Not to my knowledge. Last I had heard they were a bit off on the length/amount of the contract. It'll be interesting to see what they settled on.

MAN! Phoenix is going to be one tough team this year. Great to have Carcillo back. I bet Kris Barch is crying in his beer right about now...

Awesome! You've gotta love the Desert Rat. Hopefully he matures just enough to keep himself out of Gretzky's doghouse, but it's his craziness that makes him so much fun to watch.

nice i love carcillo as im sure everyone at hockeyfights.com does. 350 PIMS in 55 games is pretty damn impressive. if he played all 82 games he would've pushed 500.

About time! Nice signing, i was getting worried he was heading out east. Best signing by the yotes in a long time. They keep one around instead of letting them go. Nice job. Now let him go nuts and play his game! No leash and no trips to the minors.

Bingo. Good job Maloney.

His PIMs/fights should go down with the additions of Fedoruk and McGrattan but he will still occasionally fight and will participate in the wild brawls the 'yotes usually have.
