Coyotes Re-Sign Bissonnette to Two-Year Extension

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-signed forward Paul Bissonnette to a two-year contract.

“We are very pleased to sign Paul to a new contract,” said Maloney. “He is a tough, hard-working player who has contributed to our team in a variety of ways this season.”

Bissonnette, 25, has appeared in 40 games with the Coyotes this season, recording 3-2-5 and a team-leading 112 penalty minutes (PIM). He has set career-highs in goals, assists, points, PIM and games played this season, his second in the NHL and first with the Coyotes.

Last season, Bissonnette appeared in 15 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, recording one assist and 22 PIM. He also played in 57 games for Wilkes-Barre, Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, where he registered 9-7-16 and a team-leading 176 PIM.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Bissonnette has appeared in 161 career AHL games with Wilkes-Barre, collecting 13-17-30 and 387 PIM. He has also played in 101 career ECHL games with Wheeling and has recorded 16-53-69 and 162 PIM. Prior to his professional career, Bissonnette, a native of Welland, Ontario, played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Saginaw and Owen Sound.

Bissonnette, who was claimed off waivers by the Coyotes on Sept. 30, 2009, was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Good for Biz Nasty. Kinda surprising to me though considering he's been a healthy scratch for a while now.

I love this. Nice to know we are going to have at least one fighter on the squad for the next two seasons. Regardless of whether or not you think Bissonnette is an entertaining fighter, he does his job well.

Good news! There are not many fighters out there under contract next year on one-way deals. I made a list of the guys on expiring contracts over here:

I'm glad he's in Phx so I don't have to see or hear of him ever.

That's probably a good thing for you since he would beat anyone on the Flyers. Keep up the quality posting. Thank god we have an archive of 8000+ of these beauties. A heavy-weight gets a two year extension, what terrible news for us fight fans.

One of the good things about players on the Coyotes is that they usually don't get overrated on here, apparently that's just too much to ask for Bissonnette. He's a light heavy that is just dreadful to watch.

If you guys love him thats fine, but for my money he is a light weight version of Ivanans, and is just taking up a spot for a better person in the minors.

Not really seeing the comparison to Ivanans, Biz has more points in 40 games this season than Ivanans has in 133 games over the last 2 seasons. Watch his fight against Shelley and see his jersey jabs are highly effective, and keeps his opponents off balance. For his size I think he's more underrated than overrated.

Fair enough, but I'll take any willing combatants we can get in this league. Would you consider some of his numerous victories against tough dudes upsets? He's not really undersized for a heavy.

He is a light heavy. A good one. Even if he lost to Johnny Boychuk .
