Coyotes Deal Al Montoya to Islanders
GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired a sixth-round draft choice in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft from the New York Islanders in exchange for goaltender Al Montoya.
In 21 games with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL) this season, Montoya has posted an 11-8-0 record with a 3.19 goals against average and .891 save percentage. In 2008-09, Montoya played in five games with the Coyotes, posting a 3-1-0 record with a 2.08 goals against average. Montoya was acquired from the New York Rangers on Feb. 26, 2008. He was drafted by the Rangers in the first round (sixth overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. |

Coming off a season ending injury last year, he has actually played decent. He is nothing like he used to be, if he even was anything special, but he should be able to a bit better than the back stopping plugs the Isles have thrown in.
6th rounder, why even bother.

I think it might have been easier for Garth Snow just to strap on the pads
Here's to Montoya living up to that potential cause lord knows the Isles need some type of break here my god lol |

definitely an interesting move...
Surprised but not shocked, especially after last night. Montoya has proven, at lower levels, that he can handle pressure, but can he handle a regular start in the show? After he left New York and got hurt last year, I was sure he was a career minor league player....which is respectful, but with all the hype coming out of Michigan after he won the championship, people thought he was a goaltending star of the future and it never really got going. Al has a chance to make it a regular thing to stay up in the NHL for at least the rest of this season if he can keep his sh1t together.
Good luck, Al...gonna need it!

I guess this will put an end to the "rumour" that the Leafs may try to move Jiggy to the Isles. They'd probably be better off with Jiggy than Montoya but Al comes cheaper. No offence to Isles fans but man is that organization a mess. Damn.

Well being a Soundtiger season ticket holder, Mikko giving up 5 goals in a game is nothing out of the ordinary. He always gives up 5 goals, so he should be used to it.

Montoya is definitely not someone i'd be eager to throw out there either... former high prospect that has never panned out... The season for the Islanders was already pretty much over, this does nothing to make the team less awful.
