Coyotes Acquire Matthew Lombardi from Maple Leafs

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired center Matthew Lombardi from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for the Coyotes fourth round draft choice in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

“We are very pleased to bring a player like Matthew back to our team,” said Maloney. “Matthew is a very strong skater who will add quickness and skill to our lineup. He is an intelligent center who will be a great addition to our team and provides us with added depth at the center position.”

Last season, the 5-foot-11, 191-pound Lombardi played 62 games with Toronto, recording 8-10-18 and 10 penalty minutes (PIM).

During the 2009-10 season, Lombardi registered 19-34-53 and 36 PIM in 78 games with the Coyotes. His 34 assists and 53 points were career highs. In 2008-09, the 30-year-old native of Montreal, Quebec played 19 games with the Coyotes (5-11-16) after being acquired from the Calgary Flames. Lombardi has scored 14 or more goals five times in his career and collected 36 or more points four times. He scored a career-high 20 goals in 2006-07 with Calgary.

In 508 NHL games with Calgary, Phoenix Nashville and Toronto, Lombardi has collected 97-157-254 and 285 PIM. He has also played in 40 career playoff games recording 3-13-16 and 12 PIM.

Toronto eats Lombardi's $500,000 signing bonus, plus some additional salary.
Dreger

it's a 2014 4th round pick (3rd round if Lombardi re-signs w/Coyotes)

Another injury prone cream puff for the Coyotes.

If he can stay healthy his speed can fit right in with Boedker and Korpikoski.

Word is Paul Bissonnette and Joel Rechlicz will be swapping the fourth line with Chipchura and Gordon.

Really surprised Nonis was able to find a taker for Lombardi. I was hoping he would be put on waivers to help ensure roster spots for grittier players like Brown, Komarov and Orr so getting a 3rd or 4th round pick for him is just bonus.

I was rooting for him last year to rebound from his concussion but it became painfully obvious as the season went on that he isn't an NHL caliber player anymore. Maybe he will play better in Phoenix but I wouldn't bet on it.

Lombardi was never better than a 20 goal scorer over his career so why everyone blew this guy up to be more than he was (including myself) is beyond me.

Experienced 2nd and most likely 3rd line center so getting a mid round pick is pretty even in my book.

If one thinks this is a steal for the Leafs, just look at their track record over the last few years.

They've had a mish-mosh of talent before Burke came and went.

Maybe decent coaching and a change of environment is just what Matthew needs...

Toronto still won that trade to get Lombardi, unloading Brett Lebda onto an unsuspecting Predators. But I'm glad he's gone.

I'm disappointed. It seems like Lombardi is done but whatever, we gave up nothing for him.

And where is Lebda, Lombardi, and Franson?

Oh yeah, that's right. The Preds got a pick out of Lombardi playing more than 60 games.

Unsuspecting my ass...

Franson? He's a regular on the Leafs defense.

Lombardi and Franson for Lebda, Slaney, and a late pick. You cannot say that was a loss for Toronto, regardless of how many games Lombardi played.

Did he get called up? That would be cool.
