Coyotes Acquire Lee Stempniak From Toronto

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired right wing Lee Stempniak from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Matt Jones, a fourth round choice and a seventh round choice in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Stempniak, 27, has recorded 14-16-30 and 18 penalty minutes (PIM) in 62 games with the Maple Leafs this season to rank 3rd on the team in goals and 4th in points. His five power play goals also ranked 2nd on Toronto. Stempniak split last season between St. Louis and Toronto and finished with 14-30-44 and 33 PIM in 75 games. A native of West Seneca, NY, Stempniak registered a career-high 27 goals and 52 points while appearing in all 82 games for St. Louis in 2006-07.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Stempniak has appeared in 356 career NHL games with St. Louis and Toronto, recording 82-109-191 and 146 PIM. He has also represented the United States at each of the last three World Championship tournaments (2009, 2008, 2007). Prior to his professional career, Stempniak played four seasons at Dartmouth University. He was originally selected by St. Louis in the fifth round (148th overall) of the 2003 Entry Draft.

Jones, 26, has not played this season due to injury. In 2008-09, he recorded 2-4-6 and 40 PIM in 58 games with San Antonio of the American Hockey League (AHL). He has also appeared in 106 career NHL games with Phoenix where he has collected 1-10-11 and 63 PIM.

Leafs get a couple late round picks. They are lucky to even get that for Stempniak.

He was supposed to be a decent scoring winger but he was far from that in Toronto. Maybe he will find his game in Phoenix but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Reasonable deal.

Scott, he's a good skater. He's small but he finishes his checks. Good on the forecheck. He's supposed to score but doesn't do much of that. He played on the point on the powerplay for the leafs when it was doing well. He's just reallllly inconsistent and will drive you crazy when he disappears for long stretches. He could work out under Tippett.

I'm glad the Blues got Steen and Colo for him. I really thought the Sabers would make a push for him.

You're right this year is a waste. Kaberle will fetch something in the summer hopefully. Until then, we have Kessel, that's it. And Stempy wasn't any offense really. But he should do better with better players.

Farewell *rustles through papers* Leon Stempniak. Lee. Sorry.

Quote:
We've successfully converted two first round picks in Alex Steen and Carlo Colaiacovo into a 4th and a 7th rounder. Really it's no wonder why Toronto never wins games.

Lee Stempniak is a victim of his sophomore campaign that saw his shooting percentage clear 14 as he potted 27 goals on a promising young St. Louis Blues squad. Since that season Stempniak's shooting percentage has been a steady eight point oh and people have called him a failure.

Stempniak wasn't as invisible as everyone would like to claim he was; he was a steady two way player for Toronto that rarely did anything completely retarded. Might as well move him for anything but you have to think that the Steen / Carlo trade looks terrible eighteen months later.
