Coyotes Acquire Jamie Rivers from Detroit

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have acquired defenseman Jamie Rivers from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a seventh round draft choice in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6-foot-0, 195-pound Rivers has played in 15 games this season with the Red Wings, collecting 0-1-1 and 12 penalty minutes (PIM). In 10 NHL seasons, Rivers has registered 16-41-57 and 323 PIM with St. Louis, NY Islanders, Ottawa, Boston, Florida and Detroit. He has also played in 15 career NHL playoff games with St. Louis, Ottawa, Boston and Detroit, recording 1-1-2 and 8 PIM.

In 2003-04, the 30-year-old Rivers played in 50 games with the Red Wings, tallying 3-4-7 and a career-high +9 rating. His best season came in 1999-00 with the Islanders when Rivers set career highs in assists (16), points (17) and average ice time (19:39 per game) in 75 games.

While with Worcester of the American Hockey League (AHL), Rivers played in the 1996 AHL All-Star Game and was named to the 1997 AHL Second All-Star Team. Before turning pro, he enjoyed a successful career with Sudbury of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In 1993-94, Rivers led the entire OHL with 89 assists while racking up 121 points in 65 games. While with Sudbury, he was named to the OHL First All-Star Team and Canadian Major Junior Second All-Star Team in 1994, and OHL Second All-Star Team in 1995.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Rivers was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 3rd round (63rd overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.

So they get rid Sean O'donnell and get Jamie Rivers to replace him? Toughness for whatever the hell Jamie Rivers adds.

This has to be the blockbuster of the day! Based on what the analysts on TSN are saying this is all about cap room for Detroit. It's too bad for him that he's leaving a cup contender, but he will probably be a much larger contributor in Phoenix.

Ha, don't I look like a fool, or a fortune teller maybe.

Rivers just said the same as I did in my last post in his telephone interview!

Oh lord, this is depressing. Rivers wasn't a huge loss, but I did like the guy, and yeah he was one of Detroit's toughest players. This better be making room for someone tougher to come in. Phoenix got a decent player. He's a journeyman for sure. He's not flashy but he's not crap. A solid dependable 6th D-man I'd say, maybe 5th D-man.

this move hardly makes press, sure it was trade deadline day, but couldn't Holland pull more magic and get some kind of prospect for him?
