Coyotes Acquire Forward Antoine Vermette

GLENDALE, ARIZONA – Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired center Antoine Vermette (AN-twuhn, vuhr-MEHT) from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a second-round draft choice in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (acquired from Ottawa), a fifth-round draft choice in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and goaltender Curtis McElhinney.

“We are extremely pleased to acquire Antoine,” Maloney said. “He is a smart, skilled, two-way center who will be a great addition to our lineup.”

The 6-foot-1, 198-pound Vermette has recorded 8-19-27 in 60 games this season for the Blue Jackets. In 600 career NHL games with Columbus and the Ottawa Senators he has posted 141-178-319.

The 29-year-old native of St. Agapit, Quebec has appeared in 42 career NHL playoff games collecting 4-4-8. During the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs, Vermette appeared in 20 games with Ottawa and recorded 2-3-5 in helping lead the Senators to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Last season Vermette posted 19-28-47 in 82 games with the Blue Jackets. He recorded career highs in goals (27), assists (38) and points (65) during the 2009-10 season with Columbus. He was originally drafted by Ottawa in the second round (55th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6-foot-2, 197-pound McElhinney has played in two games with the Coyotes this season, posting a 1-0-0 record with a 1.67 goals against average and a .944 save percentage. The 28-year-old native of Calgary, Alberta has appeared in 25 games with the Portland Pirates (AHL) this season, registering a 10-13-0-0 record with a 3.04 goals against average and a .907 save percentage. He was originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round (176th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Columbus gets draft picks and a player from Portland in return so far per McKenzie twitter.

"Hearing a pair of draft picks are going from PHX to CBJ for Vermette. Details to follow."

CBJ gets 2012 2nd rounder (OTT's), 2013 5th rounder and netminder Curtis McElhinney.

Via Pierre Lebrun:

That 5th-round pick in 2013 becomes a 4th-rounder for Columbus if Phoenix wins a playoff round this year.

Curtis McWhateverthehellinney... yeah he should rule the problem in front of the net in Columbus.

The Coyotes did a good trade. Antoine Vermette is a potential 20-25 goals scorer (50-65pts total), and is an all-around forward that plays on the penalty killing unit or on the powerplay... this, for a 2nd rounder, a 3rd netminder and a 5th rounder.

Don't tell me that the Habs got more than this for Hal Gill... Scott Howson is a ridiculous GM.

Always wanted to see him in a Pens uniform, then I saw him live a few weeks ago. He looked lost. Hope the change of scenery helps him.

Also looks like Ray Whitney won't be moved now.

Very happy to see Vermette end up here. Essentially, it was Turris for Runblad and Vermette. I'll ake that all day.

Hell of a job, once again, by Don Maloney.

Vermette (from what I have seen) has a geat to way game and the way Tippet applies his styl as a defense team first, he will fit right in. Not to mention he is very persistant on the dot.

Ha, listen to you whiny ****s. Bettman has nothing to do with the way Maloney works. Budget wise, yes, but the way he goes about dealing within that budget, is his own work.

Cant help but to see a strap cashed team, within a small budget, doing things that teams that spend to the cap cant? Hey, to each is there own. Keep er' movin'

Robbery by the Coyotes. I find it hard to believe Columbus couldn't have gotten a better return than that.

That should say it all but even that is hard to fully comprehend. It isn't like Vermette is some kind of elite talent but he's worth more than what they received in return.
