Coyotes Acquire Dave Scatchard from Boston
GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have acquired center Dave Scatchard from Boston in exchange for defenseman David Tanabe.
In his 8th NHL season, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Scatchard has played in 16 games with the Bruins this season, recording 4 goals, 6 assists, 10 points, and 28 penalty minutes (28) while averaging 16:55 of ice time per game. In his first and only season with Boston, Scatchard ranked 2nd on the club in faceoffs taken with 272 and had a 54.8 faceoff win percentage. He joined the Bruins when he signed as a free agent on Aug. 2, 2005. In 542 career NHL games, Scatchard has recorded 111-121-232 and 861 PIM with the Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. The Hinton, Alberta native has also played in 17 NHL playoff games (all with the Islanders), registering 2-2-4 and 34 PIM. In each season of his NHL career, Scatchard has had a faceoff winning percentage of at least 52.7%. Scatchard, 29, played four and a half seasons with the Islanders from 1999-2000 to 2003-04. His best season came in 2002-03 when he led the Islanders with a career high 27 goals and tied his career high in points with 45. In 2000-01, Scatchard collected 21 goals and 45 points, ranking 2nd on the club in goals. He also finished 8th in the NHL in faceoff winning percentage with 55.1% and led the team with 5 game winning goals. In 1999-00, his first season with the Islanders, Scatchard ranked 9th in the NHL in faceoff winning percentage with 56.6%. Originally drafted by Vancouver in the 2nd round (42nd overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Scatchard began his NHL career with the Canucks, playing in two and a half seasons with Vancouver. He was then traded to the Islanders on Dec. 19, 1999 with Kevin Weekes and Bill Muckalt in exchange for 2nd and 3rd round draft choices in 2000 and Felix Potvin. Tanabe recorded 4 assists and 8 PIM in 21 games with the Coyotes this season. In 317 NHL games with Carolina and Phoenix, Tanabe has collected 20-58-78 and 145 PIM. The 6-foot-1, 212-pound blueliner joined the Coyotes on June 21, 2003 from Carolina along with Igor Knyazev in exchange for Danny Markov. Tanabe was originally drafted by Carolina in the 1st round (16th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. |

Pretty one sided here in favor of the Yotes. Wonder if salary had anything to do with it?

It made sense to get a D man, but I don't know how solid this Tanabe is. TSN's scouting report made him sound a little questionable in his own end, which is where the B's Dmen have been pretty weak, but I dunno.

Nice pick up for pheonix, looks like Orr has one less person to fight for a seat with. I like dave scatchard, sucked when he left vancouver, he should help out pheonix.
Boston adds more depth on D. |

Tanabe is no slouch. He has a lot of upside. For some reason he hasn't looked good so far this season. But he has great wheels. One of the fastest defensemen in the league (even though he doesn't get recognized much for it). However he is more offensively gifted than he is defensively. Needless to say he can sometimes be a liability out there. Playing with a guy like Brian Leetch will likely help further his development.
I have always liked Scatchard on the other hand. And at least he'll add a little grit on such a pussified Phoenix team. The Coyotes have never been deep at the center position so Dave is a perfect fit. |

Now I'll start watching the Coyotes. Scatchard is a class act. He's always been one of my favorite players. This is awesome news!

This is very good news being a Yotes fan. Realistically we weren't going to be getting an enforcer with Gretzky at the helm, so this is pretty much the best we could hope for. And God knows the Yotes could use some grit. In terms of those wondering about Tanabe, as HordiBrusk said, he can absolutely fly. Last year Shane Doan said Tanabe was the fastest guy he's ever played with. And he has pretty decent size as well. Whether he'll ever live up to the lofty expectations which have been following him for ten years remains to be seen. If I had to bet I'd say it's doubtful. The guy's had 16, 13, and 12 points the past 3 seasons. Not exactly stellar numbers from a supposed offensive dman. I'll tell you one thing though, with his size and speed if they could teach him or encourage him to hit he would be an absolute monster. In terms of salary, Tanabe's making just under a mil, whereas Scatchard's making $2.1 and locked up for four years. Overall I like the deal for Phoenix not only because Scatchard adds toughness, but when Gauthier comes back O'Donnell will likely still have a job.

This trade was made more than likely because the yotes were dressing 7 d-men on Wednesday against Colorado with Gauthier coming back. I am just curious as to what will happen when Nedved comes off the IR and dresses on Sunday's game against Columbus. Lundmark should definaetly be sent back down. Also, Gretzky also said on AZcentral.com that there is no real room for an enforcer anymore. We shall see what happens from here. Go Yotes.

Anyone that thinks this is a one sided trade for the Yotes is a bone head. I like Dave Scatchard as much as the next guy. But Boston has way too many centers as this point, and someone was one the way out.
Joe Thornton, Brad Boyes, Patrice Bergeron were staying. So that left Alex Zhamnov and Dave Scatchard. Dave has been healthy longer and is being paid less, Thus the trade. As Hordi Said, This kid is no bum.Tanabe is 25, was drafted by Carolina as their first pick, 16th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He played one season of college hockey at the University of Wisconsin, leading team defensemen in scoring that season with 10-12=22 totals in 35 games and earning 1999 WCHA All-Rookie Team honors.
