Columbus Signs Derick Brassard to Four-Year Extension

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed center Derick Brassard to a four-year contract extension, which begins in 2010-11 and continues through the 2013-14 campaign, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today.

Brassard, 22, tallied 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points with 17 penalty minutes and a +12 plus/minus rating in 31 games in 2008-09 before suffering a season-ending injury at Dallas on December 18. At the time of the injury, he was leading all NHL rookies in points, ranked second in goals and assists and third in plus/minus rating. He was the NHL’s Rookie of the Month in October after notching 4-5-9 in 10 games.

“We are pleased to have Derick under contract for the next five years,” said Howson. “Derick’s determination, passion and talent make us believe he will be an important part of our team in the coming years.”

Brassard was the club’s first pick, sixth overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft. He has collected 11-16-27, 23 penalty minutes and a +8 plus/minus rating in 48 career NHL games. He appeared in 17 games with Columbus in 2007-08 and also tallied 15-36-51 with 51 penalty minutes and was +9 in 42 games with the Syracuse Crunch, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate. He was selected to play in the AHL All-Star Game and went on to add 4-9-13 and 10 penalty minutes in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games that year.

The native of Hull, Quebec registered 75-143-218 with 141 penalty minutes and a +18 plus/minus rating in 151 career games with Drummondville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2003-07. After tallying 25-51-76 and 25 penalty minutes in 69 games in his first full season with the club in 2004-05, he racked up 44-72-116 and 92 penalty minutes in 58 games in 2005-06. He earned First Team QMJHL All-Star honors and won the Michael Bossy Trophy as the league’s best professional prospect after ranking sixth in the QMJHL in assists and seventh in points.

Hey all they gotta do is tell the damn kid no fighting and there will be no problems!

Let me also remind you he was leading ALL rookies in scoring before he hurt his arm.

Great signing I see this kid doing great things for the club in the future!!

He was having a great year last season before getting injured. I doubt we'll be seeing him drop the gloves again anytime soon since it ended up costing him most of his rookie year. But if he can stay healthy, he looks like a pretty good player on the rise. Good news for Columbus to have him around.
