Chris Pronger Suspended One Game

OTTAWA - Anaheim Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger has been suspended for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final for a blow to the head of Ottawa Senators center Dean McAmmond Saturday night.

The incident occurred at 2:01 of the third period. No penalty was assessed.

“A variety of factors were considered in reaching this decision," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "Mr. Pronger used his forearm to deliver a forceful hit to the head of his opponent. Also, his actions caused injury to his opponent."

Pronger also was suspended previously for delivering a blow to the head of Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom in the Western Conference Final.

Pronger will be eligible to return for Game 5, Wednesday at Anaheim.

Pronger Suspended for Game 4

OTTAWA (CP) - Chris Pronger will miss Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final.

The Anaheim Ducks defenceman received a one-game suspension Sunday after hitting Ottawa's Dean McAmmond in the head with his forearm during Game 3.

"This one took a lot of thought," Colin Campbell, the NHL's executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, said at a news conference. "It wasn't an easy one. It didn't jump out at us right away."

McAmmond left Saturday's game with a head injury and is doubtful for Game 4 on Monday.

"McAmmond doesn't look promising," Senators coach Bryan Murray said.

Anaheim leads the NHL championship series 2-1.

It is the sixth career NHL suspension for the six-foot-six, 220-pound, hard-hitting all-star and the second in these playoffs. During the previous round against Detroit, Pronger was banned for Game 4 after his hit to the head of Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom against the boards.

Pronger wasn't penalized on the ice for either of the hits that led to his suspensions.

McAmmond was hit as he skated with the puck toward the Ducks net. He did a spin, fell backward, struck his head on the ice, and slid into the corner in the Anaheim zone at 2:01 of the third period.

He briefly lost consciousness, Murray said, but there was no official announcement that the veteran of 14 NHL seasons sustained a concussion.

After receiving medical attention for several minutes, a dazed and woozy McAmmond was helped to the dressing room and didn't return.

Ha, beat me to it.....

They can win without him, they did it before....

I agree with this. You should not be allowed to hit a guy in the head with your forearm. come on...

Bahhh, my bad. I was surprised it wasn't already up when I started. Merge the threads I guess.

Bad call by the league in my opinion. They missed what should have been a 2 minute minor. Pronger wasn't aiming for McAmmond's head, but the angle they collided it just happened to impact like that. Pronger should have been more careful, but I think this suspension only happened because he was already on thin ice after the Detroit series.

Just take hitting out of the game and put us out of our misery.

2 minute elbowing penalty maybe, suspension NO!

Ducks should rally around this and take game 4. Scott Niedermayer needs to play a lot better tomorrow!

Absolutely ridiculous ruling. Pronger is a big guy, unfortunate hit, but not suspension worthy. The NHL really wants to do anything they possibly can to make sure the Ducks do not win the Cup.

Disgusting.

Pronger is a gutless pu**y and the one game suspension was the right call for his blatant ITI elbow to McAmmond's head. The replay video was very clear and dead-to-rights caught the prick AGAIN. Glad McAmmond's helmet stayed on when his head hit the ice after being knocked out by Pronger's ITI elbow. Colin Campbell already warned Pronger he was not going to tolerate this kind of headshot garbage after the Holmstrom suspension. He had no choice but to suspend Pronger again plus McAmmond's injury was worse than Holmstrom's. Pronger should consider himself lucky he didn't get a 3 game suspension for this second incident in the 2007 playoffs.

The thing that is rediculous is that Pronger has been suspended for 2 different playoff games for 2 incidents in which no penalty against him was ever called. What kind of precedent does this continue to set for the officiating and rules in this league??!?

This is again, another reason why hockey is a second rate sport in the U.S.A.

I think that's the biggest problem. How is it possibile that the refs don't call a penalty if the hit is worth a suspension?
In Europe you usually get a game-misconduct for such hits and eventually a suspension afterwards.
IMO the best thing would be handing out a game-misconduct for such hits.

the thing is, for the Tomas Holmstrom hit they though Neidermayer was more to blame then Pronger, but this one was a blown call, which isn't a first nor will it be a last.

He should have gotten at least 2 games for this one.
