Carolina Gets Bryan Allen From Florida

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired defenseman Bryan Allen from the Florida Panthers in exchange for left wing Sergei Samsonov.

“Bryan is a good addition to our defense,” said Rutherford. “He has great character and experience and will add size and grit to our team.”

Allen, 30, has totaled four goals, eight assists (12 points) and 63 penalty minutes while averaging 19:12 of ice time per game in 53 contests for the Panthers in 2010-11. The Kingston, Ont., native leads Florida defenseman in hits (83) and ranks fourth among Panthers skaters in blocked shots (76) this season. Originally selected in the first round, fourth overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Allen (6’4”, 220 lbs.) has tallied 28 goals, 71 assists (99 points) and 629 penalty minutes in 500 career NHL games with Vancouver and Florida.

Not bad, Gleason and Allen would be nice to see. Samsonov is a decent player.

decent trade for both team.
Samsonov hasnt played his best hockey in last few years but right now looks like he has played a better hockey.
Allen is that worthy defensive defenseman type, who has played already several seasons in the NHL too but Samsonov is a veteran.

I don't get what the Panthers are trying to do...they got rid of Frolik (a promising talent), they trade for Dvorak (34 years old) and eventually for Samsonov.(32 years old)

How is that going to help you to rebuild? I hope they are just unloading the players with money and let the return-players Dvorak, Samsonov go in the offseason to have money for free agents.

Florida have one quite useless player in their team as its Chris Higgins(forward).
Sending Higging and draft pick to getting some experienced ok defenseman.
They needs defensemen though, lossing few now.

When I was a kid, I met Bryan Allen and he was a total dick. I've kinda held a grudge ever since.

^ That was the fight that earned Tarnasky the moniker "Tricky Nick". Dirty, but effective.

yeah, Samsonov is on the last year of his contract, so technically Florida picks up $2.9m in cap space for the summer.

I'm pretty pleased with this move. We got a gritty big defenseman for a bum we didn't want anymore. Not a bad move.

Pissed we lost Carson on Waivers though.

Thought Allen might be in the Panthers long term plans, but guess not. Panthers were in full firesale mode today, I'm just surprised they traded so many to other Southeast division teams....

I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything like what the Panthers did over the last little while. They must think this is one of the best/deepest drafts in history the way they have been collecting picks.

Don't get to see Allen play much anymore. But, unless his play has dropped off from his later 'Nuck days, I love this kid. Quietly does his job night in and night out. Not sure what his mobility is like these days though.
