Caps Re-Sign Dainius Zubrus
 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Dainius Zubrus to a two-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

In eight NHL seasons Zubrus has totaled 91 goals, 152 assists (243 points) and 303 penalty minutes in 539 games. Twenty-one of his goals have come on the power play, two were shorthanded tallies and 14 were game-winners.

Zubrus, 27, was acquired in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens March 13, 2001. Philadelphia’s first-round selection (15th overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, Zubrus made his NHL debut with the Flyers in 1996-97. The 6' 4", 226-pound native of Elektrenai, Lithuania, recorded eight goals, 11 assists (19 points) and 85 penalty minutes in 42 games with Lada Togliatti of the Russian League in 2004-05.

Prior to beginning his pro career in 1996-97, Zubrus played one season of Tier II Canadian Junior Hockey with Pembroke of the OCJHL and Caledon of the MTJHL.

Can we call him a bust? 91 goals in 8 seasons for a 15th overall pick. Will he ever reach his potential?

For the Caps probably a good signing.

Zubrus is very talented on the ice. I think that he could easily be a 50 goal scorer this season, because of the new rules.

The Capitals did a good thing by keeping him around.
