Capitals Sign Mike Knuble to Two-Year Contract

ARLINGTON, VA. – The Washington Capitals have signed unrestricted free agent Mike Knuble to a two-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

A 6’3”, 230-pound right wing who will turn 37 on Saturday, Knuble has scored at least 21 goals in each of the last six seasons and won the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 1998. He had 27 goals and 20 assists (47 points) while playing 82 games for the Philadelphia Flyers this past season, ranking fifth on the team in goals, sixth in points, second in game-winning goals (6) and third in power-play goals (11).

Knuble has averaged 27 goals and 27 assists (54 points) over the course of the last six seasons and has played in 467 of 492 games (95%) in that time. He has scored at least 10 power-play goals in each of the last five seasons.

Knuble has played 820 NHL games with four teams – Detroit, the New York Rangers, Boston and Philadelphia – in a career spanning 13 seasons. He has 215 goals and 214 assists (429 points), including career highs in goals (34), assists (31) and points (65) in 2005-06, his first season with the Flyers. He has 494 penalty minutes, 67 power-play goals, 29 game-winners and a career plus/minus rating of +62.

Born in Toronto, Knuble played high school hockey in Michigan and played four years for the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). He reached three Frozen Fours with the Wolverines, was a second-team All-America as a senior and was a two-time second-team All-CCHA selection.

For that kinda money I'd have taken him in NJ. Is that the total or is it 5.6 a year?

This guy keeps getting older but has stayed consistent. I really wanted Ottawa to sign him 2 years ago, but it's too late now. Good player, and his size up front will be a good addition in Washington. They still need to add some serious grit and toughness or it will be a long season for Caps fans.

The Caps have already lost both Kozlov and Fedorov, right? Pretty necessary sigining and Knuble will be a good fit in Washington - nice addition by McPhee. He'll look good screening the goalie on that powerplay with Green, Ovie, and Semin.

$2.8 mil per year

Great deal by Washington. Knuble is a legit top-6 forward who can put the puck in the net and the Caps got him at a great price. And they're adding him to a team that already has some amazing players (Ovy, Green, Backstrom, Semin, etc). And Knuble will just make them even better!

Agreed he makes the Caps even more dangerous. Would have loved to see the Rangers grab him back. They could have used his size in front of the net.

Too late.

I would have been happier, with more of a pants-changing need, if they'd gotten Hossa or Orr.

Well, I guess you can't surround Ovechkin with absolute pylons.

Hopefully he learnt to fight over the summer cause he might be the toughest guy in Washington now and for Washington's sake they had better teach OV and the boys to hold up when entering the offensive zone and give Knuble time to get down there.

Now the Flyer faithful can see just how valuable a forward Knuble was here in his time when hes putting big ass in Emery's face while AO rips one through the 5 hole.

Good for Knuble, he deserved better from the Flyers, this cap situation is a nightmare that all started with the signing of Briere.
